WHPY signed on in the early 1970s. The station was first a rock & roll outlet, then country, gospel , southern gospel and talk syndicate before going dark in 1994. In 1995, WHPY was purchased by Clayton's Fellowship Baptist Church. The station now broadcasts ministry programming produced by the church along with the music and ministry of Fundamental Broadcasting Network in Newport, NC. WHPY has two 165-foot towers located just off Winston Road, about three miles from the church property.
