WHNC-AM 890 History

WHNC, signed on June 6th, 1945, and was once an affiliate of Mutual Broadcasting. On June 5th, 1948, just one day shy of it's 3rd anniversary on-air, WHNC spawned an FM half, WHNC-FM 92.5 (which was sold to the Bible Broadcasting Network in 1981 and is now known as WYFL.) Long a country station, WHNC began simulcasting Oxford's black gospel-formatted WCBQ, 1340 AM, in the mid-1990s. Both stations were formerly owned by Oxford mayor Al Woodlief until 2000, when they were sold to current owner Paradise Broadcasting. In 2005, the stations briefly aired oldies music mixed in with talk programming. In 2007, WCBQ and WHNC were sold to the RAFTT Corp. for $440,000.
