WDRU-AM 1030 History

Positive Radio Group signed on WFTK in 1989 from a studio on NC 56 in Creedmoor, blanketing eastern North Carolina with a 50,000-watt daytime-only signal. The station later moved to nearby Butner before moving to Durham in 1994 to share studios with Positive Radio Group's newly acquired WTIK, 1310 AM. From its sign-on, WFTK aired a Christian format with ministries and Southern gospel music. In October of 2001, WFTK began airing a full-time brokered Spanish format, Que Pasa. WFTK, along with WTIK, were purchased by New York-based Davidson Media Group in early 2004. In January 2005, WFTK was traded to Stuart Epperson's Truth Broadcasting as part of a $1.25 million deal where Davidson acquired two of Truth's stations in the Greensboro market. On May 3rd, 2005, WFTK became WDRU and began simulcasting the Christian talk format of Truth's WTRU, 830 AM, in Kernersville, NC. WDRU's highly directional array, in southern Granville County between Butner and Stem on Old NC 75, once aimed the majority of its powerful signal towards the southeast, which left a somewhat weak signal in Durham, just 10-15 miles away from the antenna site. However, Truth Broadcasting upgraded the station's pattern in September 2007, and the majority of the WDRU signal now aims due south, greatly improving coverage in Durham and western Raleigh. The station signs off at sunset to protect Boston clear channel WBZ.
