WFMC signed on November 11th, 1951. In 1966, George Beasley bought the station which became a cornerstone in the development of his company, Beasley Broadcast Group, which now owns stations nationwide. An FM, WFMC-FM 102.3(now WWNF), was added in the early 1970s. Beasley sold WFMC in the mid-1990s to Curtis Media Group. Long a country outlet with a heavy emphasis on agricultural news, WFMC became a black gospel station under Curtis Media. For a short time, between 2006 and 2007, WFMC was also heard on Kinston-based WWNF 97.7 (now WKIX).
