WETC-AM 540 History

WETC, whose call letters stand for "We Entertain Tobacco Country", was a long-time country station with heavy emphasis on agricultural reports. WETC signed on June 16st, 1959, to Wendell-Zebulon Broadcasting Company as a 250-watt daytime only station. By the 1970s, WETC was a 5,000-watt daytimer. In 1992, WETC became the first area radio station to program to the Triangle's burgeoning Spanish-speaking community, going completely Spanish by the late 1990s. WETC was later owned by East Wake Broadcasting and later Carolina Regional Broadcasting before being sold to Prieto Communications in 2004. The station is unique in that it has a dual-city of license, Wendell-Zebulon, both of which are separate, but nearby, communities in eastern Wake County. WETC is in the process of upgrading their signal to 10,000 watts daytime. The station broadcasts with 500 watts at night.
