WCLY-AM 1550 History

On August 15th,1962, WNOH began broadcasting as a country station. The station was founded by N.O. Harris, owner of Harris Distributors. WNOH's antenna was very near where the present-day Interstate 40/440 Beltline crosses Lake Wheeler Road, and its studios were located in the Jack Wardlaw Building on Hillsborough St. WNOH switched to Top 40 as WYNA in 1966. The station would later return to country under former WKIX owner Hugh Holder. With country music taking root on the FM dial, WYNA became Top 40 again as WRZR "The Rock of Raleigh" in 1982. The station went black gospel in 1983 as WSES. AM 1550 became WCLY in 1987. In the 1980s, construction of I-40 through southern Raleigh forced the station to move their antenna to Maywood Avenue, where it is diplexed with the WDOX tower. In the late 1990s both stations were bought by Curtis Media Group. On August 10th, 2009, it was announced that Curtis Media was selling WCLY and WDNC, 620 AM, to Capitol Broadcasting Company, which would switch WCLY to a Spanish sports talk format airing "ESPN Deportes". On October 5th, 2009, WCLY became an "ESPN Deportes" afiliate.
