WARR-AM 1520 History

The daytime-only WARR was signed on in 1970 by Vernon Steed, owner of what was then called the Warren Theater, and business partner Jim Mayes, owner of Durham's WSRC(now WRJD). Originally broadcasting with 1,000 watts of power, the station carried a mixture of R&B, gospel and oldies, as it does now, only these days WARR broadcasts with 5,000 watts, cutting back to 1,000 watts during critical hours. The station was purchased by Johnson Media Group in 1994, moving to studios at 109 Main Street in Warrenton four years later. In 2002, Quad Divisions, Incorporated purchased the Warren County station and began operating it under the name Darensburg Broadcasting. In 2004, WARR moved to studios at 824 US 158 West.
