Namesake singer/guitarist Steve Morgen and company (bassist Rennie Genossa, drummer Bob Maiman and rhythm guitarist Barry Stock) originally hailed from Long Island, New York. Signed by ABC's short-lived Probe subsidiary, their 1969 debut
"Morgen" teamed them with producer Murray Shiffrin (Morgen credited with co-producing). To get to the point, if you're into heavy psych guitar, then this is for you. While Morgen had a competent, if limited voice (he occasionally had this penchant for making what sounded like a gagging noise), he was a truly amazing guitarist. Tracks such as "Eternity In Between", "Welcome To the Void", "Of Dreams" and "Beggin Your Pardon (Miss Joan)" were simply drenched with fuzz and feedback guitar. Even the atypical slower pieces ("Eternity In Between") were worth hearing. Powered by Maiman's powerhouse drumming and suitably trippy lyrics and you're lookin' at a pseudo-classic slice of psychedelia. That largely explains the asking price !!! (The album was originally issued with a gatefold sleeve and included a bonus lyric insert/poster. Yep, our copy includes the insert.) "Morgen" track listing: 1.) Welcome To the Void (Steve Morgen) - 4:42 2.) Of Dreams (Steve Morgen) - 5:32 3.) Beggin Your Pardon (Miss Joan) (Steve Morgen) - 4:47 4.) Eternity In Between (Steve Morgen) - 4:30 5.) Purple (Steve Morgen) - 4:00 6.) She's the Nitetime (Steve Morgen) - 3:28 7.) Love (Steve Morgen) - 10:50 One single from the LP ("Of Dreams" b/w "She's the Nitetime" - Probe 474) and the were a musical footnote. |
