Here's a complete mystery to us ...  It's certainly not what we expected from this label.  The songs are credited to R. Graves and Steve Venet, with the "A" side featuring a female delivering a spoken word sci-fi flavored monolog over a backing track that mixes Telestar-styled electronic keyboards with Indian flavors.  The flip side sounds like a couple of stoned hippies trying to sing a nursery rhyme (without much success).  It also features what may be the worst whistling we've ever heard.  Fascinating in a really bad fashion ...

soul 7 Days Unlimited Tying (Pt.1 ) Trying (Pt. 2) Big Town BT 723 197? VG-/VG $20.00
Other than they sound like a male/female vocal act and they were signed to the Chess affiliated Big Town label, they're a total mystery to us ...  Kicked along by a pretty jazz guitar figure, the "A" side's a pretty ballad.

$3.50

While most Invictus and Hot Wax acts sported a pop sheen, lead singer Melvin Davis and company opted for a raw and ragged soul stance.  That may be why we like 'em so much.  Their biggest hit, the single hit # 3 R&B and #11 pop.  (Both sides play with some noise.)

Don't ask us how an Oakland, California-based soul outfit got signed to the English Pye label.  The "A" side is a mildly attractive soul ballad - a tad too slow for our tastes, but with a nice "falling in love" chorus.  The flip side is an anonymous slice of mid-'70s Heatwave-styled lite funk.

After spending weeks applying some 200 takes to get the layered harmonies on tape, the band was reluctant to release the resulting "A" song.  They finally agreed to let it out after English radio stations began playing a bootleg copy.  The result is stunning and remains one of the coolest multi-track efforts we've ever heard.  The non-LP flip side is more popish, but equally cool, and sports a nice Graham Gouldman guitar solo.  Hitting # 2 pop, it was also their commercial zenith.

The "A" side's one of Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman's most commercial and mainstream efforts, provided them with their second biggest American hit (# 3 pop).  Easily one of their catchiest melodies, it's simply glistening pop.  The suitably weird flip side (is that the gizmo making the weird slide guitar sound), was a non-LP effort.

pop 1910 Fruitgum Co. Simon Says Reflections from the Looking Glass Buddah BDA 248 1968 VG/VG- $2.50
Their first and biggest hit (# 4 pop), the "A" slice is a nifty slice of bubblgum.  Guess that's why we like the psych-tinged flip side so much better!

soul 100 Proof Aged In Soul Somebody's Been Sleeping I've Come To Save You Hot Wax HS 7004 1969 VG-/VG- $2.00
The thing we like about this outfit (Eddie Anderson, Joe Stubbs and Clyde Wilson), is that they're harmonies were so much tougher than that of their contemporaries.  Want to hear a group that sounds pissed off, then check out the "A" side.   The flip side was a more commercial number.   Their biggest commercial success, the single hit # 6 R&B and # 8 pop.

rock 10,000 Maniacs What's the Matter Here What's the Matter Here Elektra 7-69388 1988 VG+/VG+ $3.00
This is a white label promo in a regular picture sleeve cover.  The stock copy featured "Cherry Tree" on the flip side.  The promo has the "A" side on both sides.  One of their better jangle rockers, this one hit # 80 on the pop charts.
