"Once, on an out-of-town sem-ender that the org held, we were asked to write stuff about each other    and someone (unthinkingly) called Rommel patient and a good listener. When it was his turn to comment he blatantly denied having any of those qualities and he can’t think of why anyone would consider him so. Go figure.

Hard to believe, but I can imagine, ‘cause I know him, and that’s exactly how he is. No, I don’t mean unbelievably humble, just straightforward and unreserved. He is basically easy to get along with. He’s an intelligent conversationalist, and no matter what he says, somebody apparently thought that he was a good listener. And if he were not patient, I’d be long dead by now for all the things I’ve said to him all these years. There’s just something about him, or the way that he says things, that yearns to be challenged. And when you rise to the bait, sometimes (not all the time) he can be so irritatingly right. Don’t get me wrong, though. This guy is not a saint. Far from it. But he’s not constantly horrible either. There would be times when he would lapse into a period of "goodness" that would have everyone all confused, like that time he brought everyone cassava cake for no reason at all (that I could think of anyway). Or when I asked him to treat me to a movie and he actually did. It’s just so hard to explain because he’s so hard to explain. (And now I’m dizzy.)

He likes watching movies alone. He actually watched Titanic three times in a row, in one sitting only. He’s into music. I especially remember the Morisette, Jewel and Blur phases. He writes, poems and stuff, very well in fact. And that’s Rommel.

(Who now owes me. Bigtime.)"
