[The black emptiness of the screen fades out as the scene from within Slash Tannon's penthouse can be seen. He and his old friend, Michael Rivera, are still seated in their respective recliners and sipping their respective drinks; a scotch for Tannon and a martini for Rivera. Riveras face is a mess of anger, sadness and guilt as Tannon struggles to find the correct words for the moment.]

Tannon (speaking slowly, in response to what Rivera just told him): Whats happened to your family?

Rivera (takes a slow sip of his drink before speaking): In the past three months my sister was stabbed, my brother-in-law was stabbed, my youngest sister was found face down in a river and my fathermy father was caught in a car bombthat was meant for me.

Tannon (looking down, at first unable to say anything, only nodding slowly before looking up): That is part of the danger of what you dothat the people you love or care about will be hurt or worse because of a decision you did or did not make. It happened to meit happened to youit will happen to whoever comes after you.

Rivera (looking up, his drink quivering slightly in his hands): When did this happen to you?

Tannon (taking a sip of his scotch): It happened before you and your family came to Calgary. It was the spring of 2001 and I had begun to see a woman named Amanda Severance. The territory was very shaky at that point with two other groups trying to gain control over it from me and I had been spending less and less time with Amanda over the previous few weeks. I finally got past what I thought would be the most difficult part of the battle for my territory and asked Amanda to go out with me one nightto dance, to enjoy the company of each other.

[Tannon finishes off his scotch and stands up, going over to the bar where he begins pouring himself another, continuing his story as he works.]

Tannon (speaking in a way that makes it appear that he is reliving the moment in his mind): We went out and had the perfect night. It was, to that point, the happiest and most satisfied that I had ever been. It would however, end up being the worst night of my lifethen or now for me. We were walking out of a club in mid-town Calgary and we ran into an old friend of mine. I stopped to speak to him and handed Amanda the keys to my car. I told her that I would be right there and she just smiled and kissed me on the lips before walking down the little hill pathway to where the car was parked. As I spoke with Tom, the friend I told you of, I looked down and saw her entering the car on the drivers side. She looked up at me and gave me that amazing smilethat smile that had stopped my heart so many times beforebefore getting into the car and shutting the door. I heard the engine rev up as she started itand thenand then

Rivera (slowly as Tannon sat back down across from him, drink in hand): What happened next?

Tannon (slowly sipping his scotch as he continues the story): The explosionthats what happened next. One moment I saw her beautiful face, the next all I saw were the smoke and flames as my car exploded with a sound that could render a man deaf. I lost a woman, a woman who perhaps I could have spent the rest of my life with because the enemies in our business set a car bomb and she died in an explosion that was meant for me.

[The two men sat in silence for a few moments, sipping their drinks as the fireplace crackled under the flames within it. After a few minutes Tannon leaned back in his recliner and spoke slowly.]

Tannon: The idea and possibility of loss is something that people in the business just has to deal with. I told you that when you took over.

Rivera: I know Slash, I knowI should have seen these things as possible parts of my taking over your territory. But now I am losing my family, losing control of my territory. I need you to come back and help me get control back. Pleasehelp me Slash.

Tannon: I will help you get your territory back Michael but I will not take over again. I dont want that anymorethat life is not what I want anymore. I will help you because you are my friendbut then I am done.

Rivera (nodding slowly): Oktell me what to do.

[The camera fades to black as Tannon and Rivera begin to mull over their plans.]
