Summary of Interpersonal implications on hearing loss upon older persons Factors that cause problems for older persons with hearing loss Decrease in energy and fatigue - Use more energy to compensate for hearing loss, less energy available for general functioning - Increased energy demands, decreased energy resources --> less interaction with family and friends Isolation - people might avoid you if they know you are hearing impaired - due to inability to understand, inability to interact with ease, inability to achieve intimacy Decreased recreational outlets - after experience lots of embarassing situations in attempts to socialise, the hearing impaired may withdraw from social activities - going to parties, talking on phone, or other interactive socialising events may be a no go zone Anxiety/Fear/Distrust - Distrust because people start talking about you around you, not with you, also because they dont inform you of any events so mislead you - Anxiety because misintepretation of environmental noises (i.e.: door knock for thunder - leads to embarassment, fear and anxiety). Presumption of Cognitive Deterioration - hearing impaired people often misinterpret things, misunderstand things - this may lead to presumption that they have cognitive function problems Family dynamics - Loss of family dynamics due to frustration in trying to communicate with hearing impaired person - Symptoms of hearing loss may be misinterpreted: "he only wants to hear when he wants" - Anger on part of hearing impaired could mean trouble within family relations Depression - although hearing loss may cause increased risk of depression, usually hearing impaired people have a limited capacity to cope with depression Family/Personal Roles and Independent Functioning - Family and personal roles may be impaired as a result of impaired hearing (i.e.: management of finances, medical requirements - Loss of independent functioning: usually they are independent, but now they depend on family, friends to make decisions for you Living Environment - Increased chances of being placed in a nursing home (depression, decreased understanding capability, decreased cognitive function all dcrease ability to live in family home environment) PAFF DIDDL
