Summary of Burn Out Lecture Freundenberger described the characteristics of burn out as: - Chronically over-extended, cannot cope with work limit - Negativity, indifference, and callousneess towards patients whom you are meant to be helping - Feeling of insignificance - "No matter what I do, it wont help" Acronym: CNF (i.e.: CNS without the S) Maslach described "burn out" as below: - Physical and emotional exhaustion - Cynicism - less concerned about career - Inefficacy - feeling of incompetence Acronym: PC Intel Is Burnout a separate disorder? - Burnout is related to work, whilst deprression is related to every aspect of my life Who is Vulnerable? - Some people "hardy" at work - others tooo soft to cope (H) - Most dedicated workers at most risk (D)) - People in 'helping' professions - emotiionally taxing (H) - Different reactions of men vs women - mmen - cynical (I dont care), women - emotionally exhausted (MW) - Young more at risk compared to old (duee to idealism, greater pressures, and survival bias) (Y) - Detachment is a coping mechanism - moree space between me and client means less chances of burnout (D) Acronym = PMSDDY (Post Menopausal Stress Did Do You) Relationship between exhaustion, inefficacy & cynicism 1 - exhaustion - then cynicism. Inefficacy may come in between somewhere Corporate outcomes of burnout - Group of burnt out employees spells dissaster for corporation (imagine hospital full of burnt out doctors - what happens to patient care) Situational factors --> burn out - Overload: tight budget, employees physiically overworked (e.g.: interns) - Role Conflict & Ambiguity: you are forcced in two directions due to situation (i.e.: too many patients, not enough time, forced to turn them away) - Severity of Client's Problems: O&G is mmore stressful than dermatology for example - Lack of social support: junior doctors burnt out because they dont get adequate support from senior doctors - Control, information & autonomy: if youu have control, you wont burn out, if you have complete autonomy - wont burn out - Recognition and reward: promotion meanss burn out less likely.
