A CUP OF WATER
My house must be in order,
Not a moment to delay.
Everything must be just right,
For this long awaited day.

So long I'd hoped and waited,
And prayed that I'd be blessed.
With a visit from my Master,
Now soon He'd be my honored guest.

At last a knock upon my door,
I was so sure that it was He.
But when I opened the door so wide,
A begger held out his hand to me.

"I'm so cold and hungry,
I have no place to rest.
A piece of bread is all that I ask,
And I'm sure that you will be blest."

"Go away," I said, "please go away,"
His out-stretched hand I did not heed.
I was so anxious to see my Lord,
I just turned away from the beggers need.

At last my many chores were done,
I'll sit and wait for God's own Son.
With my work all done, my house so neat,
I can sit and worship at His feet.

I waited till the day was done,
The midnight hour had come and gone.
So tired and weary I fell asleep,
My Lord appeared, I heard Him speak.

" O blessed Lord you've come at last,
All day I waited patiently.
I worked so hard to make things right,
So I  could spend this time with Thee.

So many hours I waited Lord,
I was sure that this was the day.
My disappointment was so great,
Lord, why did you stay away?"

" I came to visit you my child,
Not once, but several times I came;
But child you would not let me in,
Why do you bow your head in shame?"

" My child, my child, remember,
How many times I've said to thee.
If you do it unto the least of these,
You do it unto me !

If it's just a cup of water,
Or one kind word or deed.
It will not go unrewarded,
If given in my name.

Now, my child, I'm sure you see,
Why I didn't come to visit thee.
If other's needs you would have met,
I would have been your honored guest."
