Medical Mission
Upon arriving in the Rio Dulce area in 2001, Mike and Karen Rhea found the local Indians desperatly in need of medical aid. There was not a doctor or medical clinic these people could afford and the nearest government run facility was over 40 miles away. Childbirth, emergency care and other medical needs were handled by a combination of midwives, witch doctors, or home remedies; too many time with fatal results.

The humid jungle enviroment and extreme malnutrition had dramatically lowered the immune systems of the people and made them highly susceptible to bactrial and fungal infections and numerous skin dieases. These conditions were in addition to the normal cuts, bruises, broken bones and sickness typical in any society.

Mike and Karen identified these needs as their calling and set out to establish both a central permanent and free
medical clinic and outreach medical program that would periodically deliver free medical assistance to out laying villages.

In addition to the varied medical related services organized by Mike and Karen; their "mission"in Guatemala is to provide for the spiritual needs of the people. Rayo de Esperanza brings the Word of God to this area by provideing relgious counseling, distributing tracts and bibles in both spanish and native dialects, and working with local churches and there pastors, to help create and maintain a strong Christian community.
