LPA District 8,Fall Regional

October 21 – 23, 2005

Holiday Inn Market Square

318 W. Durango Blvd.

San Antonio, TX 78204

1-800-HOLIDAY * 210-225-3211

The Holiday Inn San Antonio Hotel-Market Square is located near the festive Market Square.  Just two blocks away where margaritas and sizzling fajitas are the order of the day.  Market Square is a Mexican style plaza, complete with some of the finest restaurants, shops and galleries in San Antonio. El Mercado means "the marketplace" in Spanish and sure 'nuf, there's one right here!  You can also embark on a river barge that will take you to the Alamo and River Center Mall.  Or take a tour of this magical setting where history and a rich Spanish heritage combine to make San Antonio one of America’s four unique cities.

Saturday morning will start bright and early for the District Officers.  We will have a short meeting from 8:30am – 9:00am.  Then we will go straight into Dr. Robert Stratton’s lecture on “The History of Dwarfism”.  After that we will have the Parent Forum.  We are asking for everyone to send in questions that they need to have answered or discussed.  We will try to gather information on these topics to try to make the most of the Parent Forum.  We would like for everyone to attend to enhance the question and answer session.  Please attach your questions on a separate paper and send them in with your registration.  We are going to have activities for the children to participate in during the meetings.  We are going to try something different, instead of having a separate children’s room, the kids will be at the other end of the meeting room.  We may be crazy but we’ll see!

Also, on Saturday we have planned a golf outing for anyone who would like to participate.  All our next Tiger Woods’ should meet in the lobby of the hotel at 8:00am to depart for the golf course.  The Brackenridge Golf Course is noted as the oldest 18-hole public course in the state. Designed in 1915 by renowned golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast (who also designed Winged Foot, Baltusrol and Inverness), "Old Brack" was recently honored as the first golf facility listed in the Texas Registry of Historic Sites. It has also been inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and the Texas Open Hall of Honor, having hosted the first Texas Open in 1922. Today, the course is still a true test of shot-making. The front nine is lined by ancient oak and pecan trees, requiring accurate tee shots to score well. The back nine is more open, bringing the wind into play. Give it a rip on the 17th, a par 4 that can be reached off the tee by strong players. Par 72, Yards 6,185, Rating 67, Slope 122

The theme of the Banquet will be “Fall Festival”.  We are going to have things like bobbing for popcorn balls, fishing for creepy-crawlies, snake walk, and a costume contest. The Banquet will be an Italian Buffet.  Our chapter held a   fundraiser earlier this year and thanks to the hard work of our members we are lowering the price of the Banquet Meal.  Therefore the banquet will only cost $10.00 per person.  We are hoping to get more people to come to the banquet by lowering the price.  We are having a buffet of Lasagna, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken Fettuccine Almandine, Minestrone Soup, Shrimp and Scallop Pesto Bowtie, Alfredo Sauce, Marinara Sauce, Garden Salad, Garlic Sticks, Tiramisu, Coffee and Iced Tea to choose from.

Don’t forget Sea World and Fiesta Texas, which will be open weekends during this time of the year.  Also, the weather is much nicer now than during the summer months.

Summer/fall greetings from your district director…

We are keeping our New Orleans area members in our hearts and prayers as they recover from the damage caused by the Hurricane Katrina. We are waiting to hear from many of them before we determine how best to help…we will keep you posted.

Stephen Madison, DFW member, has graciously stepped up to the plate to develop and maintain our district’s first website! Please check back on the LPA website, http://www.lpaonline.org/, to see its debut. Thank you, Stephen!

Jaime Osborn is our new national Senior Vice President--congratulations! She has served this district well as Houston chapter president and has great plans for the future.

The national conference in Orlando was the largest in history--over 2,000 attended. I spent many hours in the board meetings and smiled proudly when many of our district members received scholarships. Check the LPA website for photos/stories and http://www.lpaonline.org/lpa_memcorner.html to review the revised bylaws and the strategic plan. Next year’s conference will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The first LPA calendar is on sale http://www.lpaonline.org/2006_calendar.pdf. Please place your order as soon as possible. Representing our district are youth members in our various chapter/geographical areas; in the future, we hope to have more notice so that we can include more members.

We have a few more reminder bands in the youth size (8” circumference--they are $3 each or 2 for $5 + shipping)…imprinted with LPA-District 8, Think Big. They were quite popular at the Temple district conference--especially since they are glow-in-the dark!

Speaking of the spring conference, we had a nice time--around 80 attended. We were most pleased to have Drs. Christopher Chaput and Jack Lay, physicians from Scott & White in Temple, as our guest speakers. Dr. Chaput specializes in spinal surgery and Dr. Lay is an anesthesiologist. We also want to remind you of some “housekeeping details” that were relaxed in Temple but will not in future district conferences. Take heed: If you plan to attend any part of the conference, you MUST pay the registration fee. There were some young adults who had to be approached to pay registration (ahem!)….and this was a bit disheartening and shouldn’t happen again. J

The last item is the “District 8 Good Neighbor Fund,” which was established to help district members in need. To get things going, I agreed to have my hair cut after the banquet…we raised a total of $420. We are waiting to hear from some of our New Orleans members to see if we can use this fund to help any of them. If you would like to contribute to our “Good Neighbor Fund,” please send your make checks payable to LPA District 8 and indicate “Good Neighbor Fund” and send to me at P.O. Box 9197, College Station, TX 77842.

Thanks for your support…and please contact me with your ideas, suggestions, etc.
