Dr.
R M PITCHAPPAN M.Sc.,
Ph.D., F.A.Sc., F.A.M.S.
PROFILE
Recent
significant publications of Ramasamy Pitchappan in 2001 in journals of
international repute deal with: (a)
whole genome scan identifying a major susceptibility locus for leprosy in
India (Nature Genetics), (b) Y chromosome diversity in Eurasian
populations (PNAS) and (c) association of interleukin-10 with HLA and BCG
status in pulmonary tuberculosis susceptibility (Infection and immunity).
Mastering
immunology in vertebrate models, he switched over to human immunology and
applied state of the art technologies. He described HLA DR2
susceptibility in tuberculosis, identified immunological spectrum, studied
treatment responses and won the Lancet’s 'Investigator Award'. In
recognition of his achievements, Pitchappan was invited by national and
international agencies to develop reference standards for HLA. He trained
skilled man power, organized quality control meets, developed computer
database as early as 80s, and designed and patented an adaptor to
prepare cell smears, an import substitution.
His
studies on several populations of Tamil Nadu described enormous allelic
diversity, ascribed to migration and selection. For the first time, he
explained a frequency dependent susceptibility of many populations to
psoriasis and tuberculosis.
As an extension service Pitchappan offers human organ
transplantation matching services for the past twenty years, only
one of its kinds from a university set up.
