Elvis in Cleveland Dream
I dreamed that I was driving on I-90, headed towards Cleveland, when I saw a long, pink Cadillac pass by. The driver was familiar, too: He wore shades and sideburns, just like the King himself. As the man drove by, he was singing one of Elvis' hit records: "You ain't nothing but a hound dog..." As I expected, the Cadillac took the exit for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so I decided to follow it there. As soon as we arrived at the Hall of Fame, Elvis got out and announced to everyone that he had been "faking" his death and gone into hiding for the last 30 years, because he was tired of the press hounding him. When the mob started asking questions, particularly about his family, his records and whether he was still living in Graceland or had moved somewhere else, the King shrugged them off as he entered the building. This led to speculation that the King was, in fact, alive, and that he had been living in seclusion until he arrived in Cleveland. But he did put on another electrifying performance, as a live version of Jailhouse Rock blasted through the loudspeakers, and then everyone was cheering the return of the 1950s legend, just as they had beck then. This dream occurred on the week of Elvis' alleged death, as he died 30 years ago tomorrow. So I dedicate it to all the Elvis fans out there, who believe that he lives on in song and film, and the many various works he made throughout his life.
