MPM2D Activity 3.2: Footloose

Specific Expectations:

-Solve systems of equations in two variables by the algebraic methods of substitution and elimination

-Solve problems arising from realistic situations algebraically and by interpreting graphs

Frick and Frack both work at an athletic footwear store. Every month, Frick is paid a salary of $350.00 plus a 1.5% commission on all his sales. Frack is paid only on commission at a rate of 5.2%, but is thinking of asking his employer for the same salary plan as Frick.

1. Calculate Frick’s monthly salary for a month in which he has sales totaling $12 500. Then calculate Frack’s salary for a month in which he has total sales of $32 000.

2. Let X represent total monthly sales and y the monthly salary. Write the equation for the relation between Frick’s total monthly sales and his monthly salary. Then write the corresponding relation for Frack.

3. Graph the two relations on graph paper. Using your graph, give Frack your best advice. Explain your reasoning.

  1. Propose two different criteria that Frick might use when he sets his personal "sales target". How much is needed for each of his targets?

5. Calculate the amount of monthly sales that would yield an equal monthly salary for Frick and Frack. Explain the scenario when the monthly sales are below this value and when they are above this value.
