Professional Experience Jun 2009 – Present The City of Calgary Senior Programmer Analyst The main project I am involved with is related to the DBA (Development and Building Approvals) business unit. My group (only 3 people) is supposed to build an application that will streamline the revenue at DBA. There are considerable challenges from both perspectives: business and technical. The business area plays a very important role for thousands of Calgary citizens on a daily basis. It generates millions of dollars per year in revenue and has a big impact in major information systems within the corporation. This, in turn, presents a huge integration challenge not just from the business side but technical as well.  From the technical point of view the application will handle communication with 3 other existing systems (third-party) using basically EAI (TIBCO) services. Besides it will deliver a few web applications and WCF services with a back-end Oracle database. Furthermore, the corporation uses a complex and huge customized .Net developer framework which is the backbone for all developed applications. It ensures best practices in software development throughout the organization and incorporates a SOA approach. The technology includes, but not limited to, Object Oriented Analysis/Programming, C#, ASP.NET, .Net framework 3.0, Visual Studio 2005, Team Foundation Server, WCF services, Oracle, Crystal and Active Reports, UML, ERD, database modeling, VMWare, EAI, Application Blocks (Microsoft Enterprise Library) etc. Aug 2001 – Aug 2008 Elk Valley Coal Corporation Senior Analyst I was involved in two huge projects: Plant Statistics and DABS (Drilling and Blasting Systems). Plant Stats: It involves the whole coal cycle (production/shipment/sale) within the company which is its core business. It is a supply chain system providing tools to monitor coal production performance, quality, inventory and transportation. On top of that the system provides automated data exchange with business partners such as CP Rail, CN Rail and Port Terminals. Users of this system will be top executive managers as well as marketing supervisors, middle level operating personnel responsible for trains/vessels schedule and control room operators. This system is responsible to save several million dollars per year. It is considered priceless from the logistics and marketing point of view. DABS: It provides real-time and advanced control engineering systems solutions to improve mine and plant operations of the Company's North American operating sites.  It is part of the same supply chain system that involves Plant Stats project (previously described). DABS supports the beginning of the whole process when the raw coal is acquired from the open pit. This multi-year project has been responsible for saving several million dollars per year. Responsibilities: * Hands-on architecture/development/support and team lead of 4 to 5 programmers/analysts. * Liaising with internal users as well as business partners (CP Rail, CN Rail, Port Terminals and Explosive Suppliers) in order to gather requirements, discuss business issues and propose technical solutions. This task involves extensive usage of UML diagrams such as Use Cases, Activity/Sequence, etc. * I was responsible for the architectural design and development of a whole subsystem in both projects which includes all phases within the SDLC. * I was the technical lead responsible for the architectural design to integrate all Plant Stats subsystems using a SOA approach. * I was responsible to maintain and enhance all DABS modules including a sophisticated GUI developed in C++. Environment: * Plant Stats: VB.NET, XML Web Services, Windows Services, Oracle, PL/SQL, TOAD, Microsoft Visual Studio, SourceSafe, Crystal Reports, .NET framework and a customized .NET developer framework. * DABS: Windows/UNIX Operating Systems, Borland C++/VB6 programming languages, COM, Oracle, PL/SQL, TOAD, Rational Rose tools including XDE, SourceSafe, Crystal Reports. July 2000 – Feb 2001 Lucent Technologies, Brazil Senior Consultant Special Development Group (SDG) Project Name: ARBOR billing system Project Scope: It provides a proprietary software package to numerous telecommunication clients in Brazil. The package supports clients’ billing activities and customized enhanced features. Environment: C/C++, PL/SQL, Oracle, TOAD, UNIX Responsibilities: I developed customized versions of the BIF (Bill Invoice Format) module for Lucent telecommunication clients (Embratel, Telemar, Intelig, etc.) in Brazil. Dec1996 - Jan2000 Brazilian Navy/International Consortium Senior Software Engineer Project Name: MODFRAG (modernization of the Brazilian frigates) Project Scope: It provides a wide range of software tools to enhance controllability of the warship defense and attack systems. This project is an embedded and real-time computing system. Environment: C++, LINUX & Windows, SUN/SOLARIS and POWER PC/VxWorks. Responsibilities: * I have undertaken the research and implementation of the multiple targets tracking system. These targets are echoed by the main searching radar of the warship. It was a DSP application and it has comprised the design and implementation of a filter (Kalman). The research has involved advanced mathematics studies in areas such as stochastic processes, probability and statistics. The implementation was in C++ programming language in different operational environments (cross platform development) such as LINUX & Windows, SUN/SOLARIS and POWER PC/VxWorks (target machine). * Liaising with internal users in order to gather requirements, discuss business issues and propose technical solutions. This task involves extensive usage of work flow diagrams. Oct 1990 - Feb1994 Itaipu Binacional, Brazil Systems Analyst Project Name: SAI (Instrumentation Monitoring System) Project Scope: It provides means for users to monitor and analyze measurement data acquired from the instrumentation equipment installed in the dam of the hydroelectric station. Environment: UNIX, RDBMS (ZIM) and C language Responsibilities: * Hands-on development/support and team lead of 4 to 5 programmers/analysts. * I have done development of a client server application using ZIM proprietary language as well as development of C code to provide the ability to interface with plotters for enhanced graphical drawings. * Liaising with internal users in order to gather requirements, discuss business issues and propose technical solutions. This task involves extensive usage of work flow diagrams. * My job, as systems coordinator, was essentially the participation and orientation of the other analysts in every development phase of the project. Aug 1987 - Sep1990 Nucleus of Software Technology, Brazil Systems Analyst Systems development and support for many projects at ITAIPU BINACIONAL. I dealt with C programming language, dBase, Clipper and Zim databases in a DOS and Xenix environment as well as LAN. Education March 1994 to November 1996 Master of Science Area: Computer Science Focus: Distributed Systems and Linear Programming ITA (Technological Institute of Aeronautics), São José dos Campos/ SP – Brazil I was the recipient of a CNPq (Brazilian government agency for research stimulus) scholarship for the whole Master of Science program at ITA. This award is granted (and kept) only to (by) high performance students. January 2000 to July 2000 ASIT - Advanced School of Internet Technology Final Essay: “A description of an Internet secure connection”, (SSL and HTTPS protocols) University/Institute: COPPE/UFRJ & IBPINET, Rio de Janeiro/RJ - Brazil December 1987 Graduation: Electronics Engineering PUC/RJ (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro) Rio de Janeiro/RJ - Brazil Master Thesis Title of the thesis: “K-Best solutions generation for the one dimension knapsack problem in distributed environment” Advisors: Prof. Nei Yoshihiro Soma, Ph.D. Sheffield, UK, 1992 & Prof. Horácio Hideki Yanasse, Ph.D. M. I. T., USA, 1981 The goal of the research involved two areas: distributed systems and linear programming. The focus is to solve a combinatorial optimization problem using the distributed computing. The optimization is based in the classical knapsack problem which, in this case, is one dimensional. The algorithm searches for the K-best solutions of the problem, not only for the best. This approach is not common to be found in the literature and researches that are carried out nowadays. Concepts such as dynamics programming and branch-and-bound method are used. The software tools and the development environment I have dealt with are C++ programming language and the PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) application in a network of UNIX workstations.
