Tempted To Talk Times Two ![]() Sorry, couldn't resist the alliteration. Betsy and I both had similar experiences and responses today for different but similar reasons. I'll start with Betsy first though I found out about her story on our way home and after my story.
Our local newspaper ran a story about nude modeling on Sunday and devoted most of a page to it, including do's and don'ts, rate of pay, etc. It was the topic of conversation at lunch today at the hospital where Betsy works. The women were talking about it, including her boss, and the most of the conversation ran along the lines of "Well I'd never do it. " Betsy said she made a couple of leading statements rather hoping someone would say "What do you know about it?" but no one took the bait, and so she said nothing. She told me about this on our way home and said she regretted not speaking on up, now wishing she had. I laughed and told her of my similar experience today.
First, for those of you who don't know, let me explain I work in an out-patient psychiatric clinic, where we treat all kinds of disorders from very chronic schizophrenia, to depression. One of my duties is to give out sample medications at fixed hours on a couple days of the week.
Second, I love movies and have movie posters up in my office, and on my office door I have a poster of "Bubble" the new movie by Steven Soderbergh on my door ( good movie, BTW) . This poster has a bin of dolls heads on it.
Today at about 1545 an older lady, 71, came in for samples of an anti-depressant. While in my office she noticed the poster and asked if it was another photo by " that guy who took the picture of all those people naked last year" I pointed out that it was not the same person, and that the Cleveland photo she remembered was taken in summer of '04. She said she liked the idea of Spencer's work and we talked a bit about him. After a minute or so she said "I'm surprised you don't have any of his works hanging on your wall." Now, while my boss does know and has seen the smaller photos, in my work it just isn't work appropriate, so that's what I told the client, who nodded and said " I guess so, because of the young people." That of course threw me back to yesterday's movie, "Mrs. Henderson Presents" about a "nearly seventy" woman and art/nudity and I came very close to showing the lady the small(4"x6") shots I do keep at the office. But I didn't, as she is a client, not fellow staff.
And so both of us held our tongues .
What would you have done, fellow bloggers ?
Silent on Spencer, a new role for me
