Hey... Im late updating my website. It was a REALLY busy weekend. We had our first detachments on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. That is where we get to play police officer. We start the day in Buffalo detachment, which is a mock up of a real police station. Then we are sent to cars and told to drive around Depot with a Cpl in the back seat. After a bit you get a call dispatched and you have to respond to the call. There are a number of factors that you have to consider before you even head to the call and you have to make sure that you have covered all your bases before you get there. Once on scene you still have to think of officer safety and info gathering. To make a long story short, I think I did rather well. It was one of the best learning environments that I have been involved with here at Depot. There were opportunities to stop the scenario and ask questions. We did one call alone and two calls with partners. One day was spent acting and then half a day on Friday was spent acting. After everything was all said and done we had to do files on the calls we were dispatched to. The files were (for the most part) small but still took up most of my weekend along with trying to squeeze in a patrol drive and workouts and studying for the midterm exam that is coming up on Thursday. Our halfway party went well. We had a lot of people show up and we raised a nice amount of money for our troop fund. I had "patrol drive 3" on Tuesday. That one is considered the hardest drive. They multi task you till you can't do it anymore. I was given instructions to take my next 3 legal left turns then two legal rights followed by three more legal left turns. While en route I had to point out 3 driving infractions, point out any Chev cavaliers I saw before the instructor did, radio other cars on patrol and ask them questions about driving and know if the answers were right. In the middle of all this, I had to call in a 10-28 10-29 (ownership info and records check) on then next cavalier I saw. Still following the beginning directions of three legal lefts etc. I was asked to call another car and ask for the time using 10 codes again. I failed to shoulder check on a bunch of occasions. Which is a LOT more than normal people shoulder check. But other than that I did fine. Now I have to wait about 3 weeks for Patrol drive 4. That is the final patrol drive. Its the test. You can't have more than 15 points on the test or you get a "U". 1 U 2 U see you. Failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign 5 points, not shoulder checking 1 point. Etc etc. I also have to learn an entire new driving area for my BOLF (Be On the Lookout For) drives which start soon. I went out for the first time on Sunday. Its a very big residential area of Regina, lots of twisty side roads and stuff. It's going to be a pain to memorize and know what direction you are travelling in. Today in PDT we had a 2 hour session on the collapsible baton. We learned different ways to strike and use the baton as well as when. Tomorrow is going to be fun. We have whats called our uniform run. Two miles in full gear. Duty belt, baton, gun, vest. We have to run up stairs, climb fences. OOOOO I can't wait. I did finally get to do the coopers run last week as well. I finished with a time of 10:41 which was a little disappointing to me personally because I know I have done better. But I still finished with a good time. Thats about it for this last week. Wish me luck on the mid term exam. |
