Month 1 down... Well almost anyway. I have a spare for the next hour. I had planned to go workout but after eating mess food I decided that might not be a good idea. Those people at the mess hall have a very good sense of humor. "Hey it's Friday, let's serve up some natchos with refried beans." Be thankful you don't have to be in the guys dorm over the next day.. ...   On to another topic.....
APS (Applied Police Science) has sure kicked into gear this week. We started getting into the real stuff. Law, punishment, the criminal code. We had files to complete and we were issued RCMP notebooks for taking notes on things that happen during the day. We even got to spend yesterday afternoon doing some acting in groups. Two people played cops, two people were actors with problems and two people observed. Now we have to make up  a file on the notes that we took when it was our turn to play policeman.
I have been practicing my driving on the skills track. We have 5 stations that we have to know. Each station has different rules. In one called the serpentine you have to drive through a tight maze of cones without hitting any. Once you get to the end of the maze you then have to do it again backwards. (NOT EASY) I have most of the other skills down but that one. I always seem to knock over one cone in reverse. The problem is that for the test you have to do it twice. I have done it once forwards and backwards once without hitting a cone but the 2nd time it is a little more challenging.
PDT (police defense tactics) is getting fun as well. We are learning take downs and different arm holds to subdue a suspect who is uncooperative.
In fitness we had the intro to the coopers run the other day. That is a 1.5 mile timed run. The guys benchmark is 10:40 and I believe the girls is 12min. We ran it slowly the other day just so that everyone new the course. It was -18....   aaaaaaaa    Then after we ran the 1.5 miles the instructor said "ok let's make this a cardio for today.  We are going to do some anaerobic exercise." So we jogged to "B" block and went inside with our cold weather cloths on. Then we had to run up and down three flights of stairs three times as fast as we could, taking two stairs at a time. Then jog outside and when every one was there we did 10 pushups and went right back inside up and down the stairs two times and back out side.  After the 3rd time -18 was really nice.  That was on Tuesday. Then on Thursday we had to do the shuttle run. This was in the gym. We had to run the width of the gym to a cd that beeped.  You started at the one side of the gym right at the black line that runs around the outside. The test started off at a light jog. You had to reach the other side of the gym and touch the black line before you heard the "BEEP". Every minute a voice came on and said you are  now entering stage 2 and every half minute the voice would say "you are now at stage 2 and 1/2." The pace got faster at every stage. . The benchmark for the guys was stage 7. I got to stage 8.5.  The fastest guy got to stage 11.
Not much else this week. We only had drill once this week but we are expected to be perfect at our next class and he might let us wear our boots all the time. We look kind of goofy all of us in running shoes.
It is amazing how much info you can absorb in just a month. Being in the DEPOT BUBBLE really just hammers it into you. Even when you are not in class you are still going over notes, working out, practicing skills. Its non stop. Only the weekends are "Sort of" free.  You have a little more time on your hands then. That's when I miss my family the most. When I have "nothing pressing" I try to keep myself busy. There is always something to do or that you can do.  I did manage to get out to the movies last weekend. That was the first time I had been off base for something non depot related. ie buying supplies. It was a nice treat to get away for a while.
Thats about all for Week 4..   check back next week...
