Rear Storage Cover
Why a cover for the small space behind the back seat?  Well everytime I have the top off (all summer) I have to carry a backpack with things that I dont want to get stolen from my open car.  In addition the back seat can be easily removed and never come back.  The plan is to make a semi-secure area to keep things such as revcovery gear, straps, tools and other misc. items from growing legs and walking away.  Although this will not be a bomb proof space it will keep anyone from walking by and pickup something of mine and continue walking.  What they cant see they cant take.  As everyone knows it is only a matter of how long it will take someone to get in, not if when someone is very determined to get in.
above and below are CAD drawings of preliminary 1/2" plywood cover to be reinforced and bolted on top and sides so it cannot be removed with out opening the rear door.  The 1.5"x1.5" square in the upper right corner is in the passenger side to allow all wires for hardtop to pass through without interference.  The symetrical cutouts in the bottom right/left allow fitment around the rollbar and plastic seatbelt covers while still allowing support around those elements.  The last cutout in the top middle/right is for the latch mehanism in the rear door.  These measurements currently work for my 2002 Jeep X, but they come very close and may need some trimming to better fit after adding carpet to match the interior.  If you would like better copies of this item please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will send you a better picture or CAD file if requested.
Elements to come:
-Middle supports to ensure a strong cover capable of carrying a person weight.
-Modifying the rear seat release lever to allow the seat to be locked in the upright position thus keeping the items in the rear more secure.
-Making a mount for the Hi-lift jack on top of the cover w/ locking capabilities.
