JEEP WRANGLER BUMPERS
What: The goal of this project is to design and fabricate a rear bumper with tire  swingout carrier and a front bumper with built-in winch plate for future additions.

Why:  The stock tire carrier has always been a part that never seamed strong enough especially when carrying a bike with my Saris rack.  Not wanting my new bike to rip off the stock rear carrier I have decided to build a stronger swingout carrier that the bike carrier will fit on.  Instead of buying a bumper for ~700 through Jeeperman.com I will just use that design and build a front rear and rocker guards for around the same price as one bumper.

Rear: The initial design is to be made from 2x4 steel with 3/16" thickness for the main bumper with 2x2x3/16 as the swingout carrier.  When final design is constructed photos will be posted.

Front: This design like the rear is from 2x4x3/16" with integrated winch plate.  Stay tuned for photos when design is done and bumpers are built.
Comming Soon:
Photos of parts purchased so far
Figure 1:  Existing rear cross member on 2002 Jeep Wrangler

To the cross member I will bolt on the new bumper and swing-away tire carrier.  Additional frame tie-in's will be used to further support the entire system as the crossmember is only 1/8" steel.
Figure 2:  Design of new swing-away rear tire carrier and bumper. Shown with 31" tire as exists on my Jeep.  Integrated into the system is an adjustable tire depth connection to adapt to different wheel backspace and tire widths.  Also included is two 1" thick D-ring attachment points and a 1/4" wall 2"x2" receiver.
Figure 3:  New rear swing away tire carrier as it is to be mounted to existing crossmember and frame.  Bumper width is the same at the body tub width.
