AWARDING OF WINNERS "TIMPALAK SA PAGSULAT SA PAGBIGKAS 2003"

President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

September is New Generations Month. It is the time of the year when programs for the youth are given emphasis as manifestation of Rotarys great concern for their welfare. Following the natural law of attrition, from the ranks of the youth of today will rise the next batch of Rotarians who will continue and carry on our legacy of service to humanity in the coming days. It is but fitting that Rotarians do their share in making this world a better place to live inby raising informed, civic conscious and peace-loving young generations.

Our club is closely monitoring the activities of our Rotaract Club in OLOPS and Interact Club in Marikina High School. The Interact has already elected their new sets of officers and they are ready for their formal induction anytime. Sad to say, the Rotaract in OLOPS was not allowed to exist by the school. Only four all-academic organizations were allowed to stay. It was suggested to the Board during its last meeting that we establish a new Rotaract Club at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina and a new Interact Club in our adopted high school in Malandaythe Concepcion High School. Once organize, it behooves all Rotarians to guide them properly.

Last month, we hold the Timpalak sa Pagsulat at Pagbigkas, one of our youth oriented projects; and tonight we are honoring the winners. On November, we will have our Storytelling Contest that will cater to students of public elementary schools. In February, we will have the Student Leadership Award for students of both public and private high schools. Holding at the least three youth oriented contests annually makes the Marikina Rotary Youth Center truly a center for YOUTH DEVELOPMENT as conceived by the Marikina Rotary Foundation.

As Rotarians, we have to be role models to the youth not only the students, the Interacts and Rotaracts, but more so to our own children. That is what is meant by accepting the ideal of service as basis of fulfillment in our personal (family), professional and community life.

To be in your childrens memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today.

What have PP Ver Farcon, PP Joe Lee, PP Roland Garcia, PP Larry Tanpengchang, PD Vic Sumulong and PDG Ting Tanco did in common? They have shared their lives as a Rotarian to their childrenthat is why they already have Rotarian children. This is also the reason why Im here today, because Rotary was shared to me at home. In the future, we hope to see more Cruzes, more de Guzmans, more de Leons, more Fidelinos, more Isidros, more Judans, more Tys, more Veranos in Rotary. Let us LEND A HAND to the Youth and to our Family.

Chelation Therapy anyone? You dont have to die from or even be sick of heart disease this was written in one of the handouts given by our guest speaker Dr. Arturo Estuita last September 4 meeting. Was it an interesting lecture or a controversial one at that? But while I was observing our members listening to Dr. Estuita, I cannot help wonder whether the subject matter was for real or what. Chelation therapy as claimed is an alternative therapy to coronary bypass surgery. Most of data presented by our speaker were anecdotes and journal reports which were not from the standard accepted medical journals in circulation normally read by internist or cardiologist. Chelation therapy is a process whereby an intravenous material e.g. EDTA solution in a dextrose is said to be given intravenously and promised to unclogged the inside of arteries by oxidation process. It claims to be safer and cheaper than bypass surgery. What I found interesting was the enthusiasm of our member who patiently listened and asked question after the lecture. Although the speaker came late and presented his lecture in his antiquated slide projector, it did not lessen the interest of the listeners. Maybe the topic was really interesting after all or the speaker has a good selling motivational skill? that remains to be provenanyone would you subject yourself to chelation therapy when need arise?

Medical Mission. Some two hundred and fifty patients from Purok 6, Cupang, Antipolo benefited from the joint Medical Mission by the Rotary Clubs of Marikina Zone last September 7, 2003. Our president Dindo Santos with spouse Cecil led the medical team together with Dir. Pons de Leon, IPP Dante Verano, PP Tony Fidelino. They were joined by one doctor each from RC Marikina North, RC Marikina Hilltop, RC Marikina Central and two from RC Metro Marikina. This joint project of the Zone is an effective way of delivering service to the community and it also benefits other clubs in putting together big project like this.

Duckpin Bowling. PP Jimmy Tiu, PP Onnie Aguinaldo, PD George Ty, PP Roland Garcia, Rtn. Junjun Farcon, PT Rolly Santos, IPP Dante Verano, Dir Celso Cruz are the members of our Duckpin Bowling team who competed last Sunday, September 7, 2003 at Farmers Bowling Center. President Dindo and Sps. Cecil graced the event to cheer the team in their quest for the championship. We ranked fourth but we still have a good chance in the next two Sunday Championship competitions. Good luck.

"ROTARY CLUB REMEMBER VICTIMS OF 9/11 WITH MEMORIAL CLOCK"

Like many of the communities surrounding New York City, Westchester County, located about 30 miles from downtown Manhattan suffered losses on 11 September 2001, when two airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center, killing 2,801 people.

Hoping to keep alive the memory of the nine members of their community who lost their lives in the attacks, the Rotary Club of Eastchester, New York, USA, is donating a clock for permanent display outside Town Hall. David Walker, who was Eastchester club president when the strikes occurred, said the loss of lives in their community galvanized the club to show support for victims and their families. And as is so often the case when tragedy strikes in one part of the Rotary world Rotarians from across the globe immediately sought ways to Help. Unsolicited, the Rotary clubs of Sendai, Miyagi, Japan, and Honolulu, Oahu, USA, each donated US$1,000 for a memorial. Eastchester club members spent several meetings discussing an appropriate memorial before settling on the idea of a clock. "We gave a lot of thought and consideration to doing something that was appropriate," Walker explains. "The idea of a memorial stone by itself didn't capture the message we wanted to send. The clock seemed like a good way to convey that the community would never forget those who lost their lives." The balance of the cost to purchase and install the clock estimated at $3,000 is being raised by the Eastchester Rotary club. Scheduled to arrive in mid-August and be installed in time for the second anniversary of the attacks, the clock face will feature Roman numerals around the dial and the date of the tragedy on the face. The names of the nine victims from Eastchester and neighboring Tuckahoe will appear on two bronze plaques on the clock's granite base, which is being donated by the family of a village trustee.
