Valley Wheel Vol. 39 No. 10 "CHELATION THERAPY"
President On Call 24/7
by Pres. Dindo Santos
We will have the official visit of our District Governor three weeks from now. Yet, while we still have enough time for that event, our Calendar of Activities shows that we have a very busy schedule until that date for our regular weekly activities; added to this list are the zone and district projects we have to contend with. In fact, all our Sundays are full: Zone Medical Mission on the 7th; District Family of Rotary Activity on the 14th; Health Watch on the 21st; and simultaneous Kalikasan Alagaan!! and Zone Operation Sagip Mata on the 28th; overlapping with these activities is the schedule of our Duckpin Bowling Team that will be competing in Group C every Sunday afternoon till the 21st.
It will really be impossible to attend every activity, less one disproves the truth of the law of impenetrability of matter - no two things can be at the same place at the same time. This is the reason why I have designated PE Kiko Pe Benito to represent our Club in the Police Memorial Day of the Civic Action Team on September 7, and the Induction Ceremonies of RC Bay in Los Baos, Laguna - a prospective sister club, on September 6.
It may also interest the members to know that the Teachers Award committee chaired by PS XC Alikpala will be very busy this coming week. Together with the members of the Board of Judges, he will be visiting 9 schools that participated in this years search for the Most Outstanding Public Elementary School Teacher. It will take 3-5 days to finish their round of all these schools depending on the schedule of the participants Teaching Demo. The final awarding will be on the September 18.
Our Livelihood Training on Dressmaking and Tailoring is on-going everyday from Monday to Saturday. By this stage the trainees are already cutting the cloths ready for sewing anytime.
The awarding of the Timpalak winners will be next meeting and the week after that will be the Club Assembly with AG Willy Banzon. So, what are we doing in preparation for the Governors Visit? Well, the Directors have been preparing for this much awaited event since July. They have done their parts during our video taping. Im just hoping that everything will turn out fine during our Club Assembly when we present the fruits of our labor our Video PowerPoint Show. Our Plans and Programs had been submitted before this Rotary Year started. So, we will just have to continue with our usual weekly activities.
What our Club needs from all of us?... our presence in meetings and activities and our ability to LEND A HAND.

Bring Intimacy Back to Love. This title is catchy. Is it romantic? What is this thing called love? Some people consider love as an affair. An affair consisting of three rings: the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering. I guess love needs to be properly expressed to be truly appreciated. Many men who are forty and above are suffering and may find this expression to be incapacitated due to erectile dysfunction or ED. This was the topic of our guest speaker, Dr. Jaime Balingit last August 28 meeting. Dr. Balingit is a Urologist who gave hope to most men who are suffering from ED. He introduced a new wonder drug that could improve ones expression of love despite ED. ED is now commonly recognized problem. While before, men with ED will hide this problem and just suffer in silence, now with the open discussion in the media, print ads and in the introduction of wonder drugs, many sought relief from the nightmare of ED. What causes ED? It could be age, hypertension, diabetes, medications for hypertension and heart disease like beta-blocker and so many other factors. The good news is, there is now a medicine that could alleviate the problem of ED. There are two in the market, one is Sildenafil commonly known as Viagra and the new one Tadalafil, Cialis. That evening after the lecture, I can see the regain confidence of many who listened well in the lecture. Many were excited to go home early that night and try their free sample of Cialis they won in the raffle. But one is advice to have a clearance first from their personal physician before using this wonder drug.
Vitamin A Supplementation. Vitamin A deficiency is a common health problem among children. It may result into blindness if not properly addressed or the common night blindness. In response to these problems, our club carried out a Vitamin A supplementation to some grade one pupils of Sto. Nio and Malanday Elementary School last August 28 morning. Together with Chairman PP Eric Ignacio and President Dindo Santos, we trooped to Sto Nio Elementary School as early as 8:00 in the morning and then proceed to Malanday Elementary School afterwards. The following lend a hand in this activity: IPP Dante Verano, Rtn. Ferdie Vergara, PP Tony Fidelino, PE Kiko Pe Benito, PP Flor de la Paz, Dir. Doy Smith and Rtn. Claro Capco. Also present were Sps. Cecil, Arlene, Vising, Lydia and Vicky.
Zone Voluntary Blood Donation Project. Blood saves lives, extend lives. This adage is as common as any sayings. In many hospitals in Marikina City and the rest of Metro Manila, there is a continuous demand for blood and blood products. In our city, we have two blood banks: The Marikina City Blood Bank at City Health Office and in the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center. One of the hospitals that have the biggest demand of blood is the Philippine Heart Center. It is where open heart surgery or any chest surgery is being performed almost on a weekly basis or daily basis and hundred units of blood is always a requirement. To ease this demand, our club together with the other clubs of Marikina Zone conducted a Voluntary Blood Donation project in cooperation with the Philippine Heart Center Blood Bank and the Marikina Valley Medical Society last August 30, 2003 at MRYC. We have collected some 12 unit or six liters of blood. Those who lend a hand in this project include: Pres. Dindo Santos, PP Tony Fidelino, PP Boy Ong, PP Manny de Guzman, PP Flor de la Paz, PP Joe Judan, PP Romy Cruz, PP Eric Ignacio, PE Kiko Pe Benito, IPP Dante Verano, Rtn. Ronie Masangkay, Rtn. Junjun Farcon, PD Ed Navarro, PD George Ty, Rtn. Noel Flores and PT Edwin Yutuc. Also in hand: Sps. Noemi, Arlene and Vicky.

"NEW GENERATIONS MONTH"
Excerpts from RI President Majiyagbe's message in the September 2003 issue of THE ROTARIAN:
Because September is New Generations Month on the Rotary calendar, this is the time for Rotarians to focus on the programs that support the development of youths and young adults. If we believe that young people are the leaders of tomorrow, we should Lend a Hand in molding them in the most beneficial ways possible. I encourage all clubs to use the slogan "Every Rotarian an example to youth" in club bulletins and publicity materials during New Generations Month.
It is also relevant to recall the Rotary Code of Policies, which states that Rotary clubs should provide a forum for young people to share their concerns, hopes, dreams, and ambitions, as well as their ideas for solutions to problems that beset them and their communities.
It is essential that clubs and districts identify socially and economically disadvantaged youths with leadership potential and invite them to participate in RYLA. Another important program is Rotaract, Rotary club-sponsored clubs for community-minded men and women between the ages of 18 and 30. Rotaractors are involved, energetic, and very committed to the Rotary ideal of service. Every Rotaractor is a potential Rotarian, so any Rotary club that does not already sponsor a Rotaract club should consider doing so this year. You will find Rotaractors' fresh ideas and perspectives to be most valuable, and when these young people eventually join you as full Rotarians, their presence will help energize and diversify your club.
Rotarians also promote the ideal of service to young people through the Interact club program. School-based Interact clubs provide youths between the ages of 12 and 18 the opportunity to work together in fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding. Of course, one of the most rewarding and popular of Rotary's programs for young people is Youth Exchange, which offers students the opportunity to learn firsthand about other cultures by living and studying abroad. And as business leaders, Rotarians are in a unique position to provide vocational guidance and career opportunities to young people. Clubs should participate in local school projects that emphasize the importance of a good education. Likewise, we should initiate or support projects that address problems such as homelessness among children, child abuse, and domestic violence.
