President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

"ON POVERTY ALLEVIATION"

Coming from a Third World country, R.I. Pres. Jonathan Majiyagbe gives so much emphasis on addressing the issue of POVERTY. Poverty is the cause of so many problems in our society. This is why we are encouraged to foster the application of the ideal of service in our personal and community life--to improve the lot of the marginalized sector of the community and make a dent in bringing about a better quality of life in the world.

The Philippines is very lucky to be chosen to host a Presidential Conference, the Rotary International Presidential Celebration on Poverty Alleviation scheduled on January 31, 2004 at Shangri-La Manila. Let us not miss this rare opportunity to attend and experience the internationality of Rotary in the like of a Rotary Convention or International Institute right at our doorstep.

In line with the coming of the R.I. President, District 3800 is already preparing a Poverty Alleviation Project to be participated by all of the clubs in our District. This is the housing project at Pinugay, Antipolo that had its groundbreaking last September. Four housing units are already being constructed and a school building was already built. A house with a 25 sq. m. floor area on a 50 sq. m. lot costs PhP 55,000. It will take 60 working days to build a unit. So to complete the project before the arrival of Pres. Jonathan, the District is already asking for the commitments and payments if possible. Our Board approved to sponsor a unit and I am soliciting your donations, beg if you please. This will be our flagship project for this year--an RC Marikina housing unit at Pinugay, Antipolo.

I know the times are hard. A peso saved is a peso earned. During the District Octoberfest, those who went with me talked about our blessings as Rotarians. We eat good food, do a lot of restaurant hopping to savor the best we can find in town. We are healthy, and can afford to travel in and out of our country, unmindful of any hospital expenses that bring sleepless nights to many of our less fortunate brothers. We spend in and do a lot of fellowship of all sorts. We are truly blessed. We enjoy to the hilt the fruits of our labor.

With all our graces, it is not asking so much to share our blessings for a worthy cause, keeping in mind the parable in the bible, of the old lady who gave all her two pieces of coins and the man that gave a big amount--an excess of his wealth; but the old woman turned out to have given more. Let us give until it hurts. Let this house be our early 39th Anniversary gift to our Club. Let us LEND A HAND to ALLEVIATE POVERTY.

On-the-Spot Painting Contest. In preparation for the celebration of the Centennial of Rotary, our Zone held an On-the-Spot Painting Contest last October 11, 2003 at MRYC. Children from 10 13 years old were invited to paint a poster with the theme Service to Others in the Community and the World. Although only handful talented children participated, it was a successful event. Those who lend a hand in these project include Pres. Dindo Santos, Sec. Val Barcinal, PP Flor de la Paz, PP Tony Fidelino, Rtn. Eduard Farcon, Rtn. Charlie Dytan, PP Jimmy Tiu, PD Ed Navarro, IPP Dante Verano, Dir. Del de Guzman and, PD George Ty. Winners of the painting contest will compete in the District Competition.

Alay Kay Lolo At Lola. It was like early Christmas in October. You can see the smile in their faces while the elderlies received some gifts and try on reading glasses donated to them in the Zone project Alay Kay Lolo At Lola. It was held last Saturday at the Taong Covered Court. This project was in cooperation with RC San Juan Del Monte and RC San Juan West and the eight clubs of Marikina Zone. Pres. Dindo was accompanied by IPP Dante Verano and Dir. Del de Guzman.

Oktoberfest. They all look fun in their suspenders and neckties. That was the costume during the District Oktoberfest 2003 held at Club Filipino last Saturday night. It was fun and everybody enjoyed the food, camaraderie and the beer of course. Our club was represented by Pres. Dindo, IPP Dante Verano, PP Tony Fidelino, VP Vincent Santos, PE Kiko Pe Benito, PP Joe Lee, Treas. Abbet Tan, Rtn. Ronie Masangkay and Spouse Cecil.

"CLUB MEMBER'S PAINFUL HOSPITAL ORDEAL MORPHS INTO EFFORT"

There is no shortage of ways Rotarians can provide assistance in their communities. Rather, for many clubs, the challenge is choosing how to put their limited resources to the greatest use. For the 25 members of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira, Victoria, Australia, the decision came easily after a club member told them about a painful experience he endured during a recent stay at a local hospital. "When this club member needed a bladder exam at Caulfield General Medical Centre, the bladder scanner was broken down, "explains club secretary Ian Marks. "Instead of a painless scan, he had to suffer the indignity of the old approach [catheterization]and the pain, he assured us, was excruciating. "Club members learned that the hospital has two old scanners, both of which are unreliable and are frequently being repaired. "The hospital was desperate for assistance," notes Marks. The full cost of a new ultrasound scanner, which provides a non-invasive, painless exam, is A$17,000. "We have provided $6,000 up front and have committed to raise the balance over this financial year," explains Marks. Fortunately, the hospital did not have to wait to purchase the new equipment. It provided the rest of the money in the short term by shifting funds from another program, which they will reimburse when the Rotarians contribute the remaining funds. "This is the largest project we have undertaken, and, as a small club, we will have to work very hard to raise the funds," admits Marks. Fundraisers planned include the club's annual Business Persons' Breakfast, a market fair, and sponsorships from local businesses.
