Valley Wheel Vol. 39 No. 15 VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH
President On Call 24/7
by Pres. Dindo Santos
We are just on the fourth month of the Rotary year and yet we have already completed more than half of our club projects. The same is true with that of our zone and the entire district in general. This means that we are right on our track, and we will have ample time for light moments and activities.
As planned, the month of October signals the start of more fellowship activities to come. After the duckpin bowling, the tenpin bowling started last Sunday. Two of our teams are competing with the other forty-four teams in the District. Valenzuela South defeated team A on all three games. Team B won in two games but Pasig South scored 30 pins more (We were told that this means we scored even on points, 2 points for RC Marikina for winning in each game, and 2 points for RC Pasig South for winning the pinfalls). The teams were back in the alley yesterday to polish their games.
We will have the Octoberfest on the 11th. We are invited to experience the German or Pinoy tradition of beer-drinking again. Of course, we are assured of a good delegation for this event. We can count on Kiko, Abet, Eduard, and Joe Lee for the drinking competition, and Tony, Dante, Celso and the rest for the ubusan ng pulutan. As promised by the host clubs, the night will be filled with fun and surprises. The District Golf Tournament will tee off on October 17 at EastRidge. Calling all our golf aficionados. Its time that RC Marikina show them who is the master of the fairways. This will be followed by the District Halloween on October 25. It will not be a night of fright but a night to remember our yesteryears. Ah, we will ensure that Pons and Celso will be around to travel together back in time on those memory lanes.
The times are hard too. With the dollar conversion rate increasing from 52:1 to 54.62:1, our funds were drained after the payment of our R. I. dues. We encourage all to settle our dues on time. We badly need it for our administrative expenses and remaining projects. With your payment we can sustain operations till the end of the Rotary Year with ease. This will be our little way of LENDing A HAND to our Club.

Livelihood Training and Skills Development. In his appeal to all Rotarians, RI President Jonathan B. Majiyagbe challenges every Rotarian to make poverty alleviation a number one aim. I realized we did just what President Jonathan has challenged us to do. In our last meeting, we had the graduation exercises of our Dressmaking and Tailoring modules for our Livelihood Training and Skills Development Program. This is the best way to alleviate poverty, to create opportunity for livelihood. There were 18 who finished the tailoring module while 19 who finished the dressmaking module. The graduates wore the dress they sew in their graduation. These graduates are assured of a good source of livelihood provided they persevere in honing their skills and entrepreneur ability. We acknowledge the dedications of Chairman Eduard Farcon who religiously visit and supervise the teaching modules and see to it the needs of the participants were all met. Also we acknowledge their mentor, Mrs. Julie Diente from the Marikina Institute of Science and Technology. Mrs. Diente is also TESDA certified instructor.
TRF Forum. Our club was represented by Pres. Dindo Santos, TRF Chairman PP Eric Ignacio, PP Boy Ong, PP Jun Farcon, IPP Dante Verano in the District TRF forum held last October 4, 2003 at Quezon City Sports Club. We are all encouraged to give to the TRF to attain our goal of $3000. All donations will now be accepted by Chairman PP Eric Ignacio.
Tenpin Bowling. They all look good in their new uniform, thats our two Tenpin Bowling Teams. Last Sunday October 5, 2003, was the opening ceremony of the District 3800 Tenpin Bowling Tournament hosted by RC Navotas. The ceremony was graced by no other than District Governor Tony Puyat with DL Mila Puyat. This year we are lucky to have fielded two teams to give us a better chance to enter the championships rounds. Our players include: Pres. Dindo Santos, PP Joe Judan, PE Kiko Pe Benito, Rtn. Junjun Farcon, Rtn. Ronie Masangkay, PD George Ty, IPP Dante Verano, PP Jimmy Tiu, PP Onnie Aguinaldo, Dir. Doy Smith, PP Tony Fidelino, Rtn. Rey Montoya, Dir. Del de Guzman, PP Roland Garcia, PP Manny de Guzman, PP Boy Ong, Sps. Minia, Corie and Lynn and also present were PP Eric Ignacio, Sps. Lydia, Noemi and Cecil.

"THE IMPORTANCE OF VOCATIONAL SERVICE"
RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe had said it well & right: that
vocational service is a key element of Rotary's identity.
"There has never been a better time for us to serve as role
models and to renew our commitment to vocational service," he
said in a keynote address. "This includes adhering to and
promoting the highest ethical standards." The significance of
The Four-Way Test, extension of vocational service to youth,
and the importance of vocational service to the future of Rotary,
were among the favorite topics Majiyagbe always discussed at
plenary and breakaway sessions.
Past RI President Cliff Dochterman always set the tone for
discussion almost always in any rotary sessions, explaining how
significant vocational service was to the flourishing of the
organization. "Vocational service is what makes Rotary different
from other service clubs," he said.
To emphasize in fact its importance, the first Presidential
Celebration which was held last July 19, 2003 had as its topic
Vocational Service. Outstanding vocational service projects,
such as adventures in aviation, youth mentoring, and an integrity
awards dinner, were highlighted. President Majiyagbe presented
vocational service awards to Peter Luongo of the Rotary Club of
Langley (D5050) for his work with a youth orchestra, and to
Gordon Coburn of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Chinatown (D5040)
for his work with First Nation (native Canadian) youth through
canoeing.
Past District Governor Chris Offer, chair of the Vancouver
Presidential Celebration, said that "The buzz and level of debate
At the tables was incredible, and the number of creative new
ideas of how to implement vocational projects in clubs was
impressive."
