THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

November is The Rotary Foundation Month. It is the time of the Rotary Year that we recognize those who contribute to make possible the accomplishment of the various programs of the foundation. We are lucky tonight to have PDG Teddy Zamora to give us an update on this topic.

In our 38 years of existence in the Rotary World, we have donated a total of more than $ 100,000. In our ranks, we have 1 Major Donor, 5 Multiple Harris Fellows (3 of whom are Benefactors), 20 Paul Harris Fellows, 23 Sustaining Members and 7 Paul Harris Fellow Non-Members. But there are still 11 who have not shared their blessings to the foundation.

We target to add another $ 3,000. Those who donated are PE Kiko Pe Benito, VP Vincent Santos, Dir. Fabi Cadiz, Dir. Celso Cruz, Dir. Pons de Leon, IPP Dante Verano, PP Manny de Guzman, PP Tony Fidelino, PP Roland Garcia, PP Eric Ignacio, PP Mario Isidro, PP Boy Ong, PP Jimmy Tiu, Rtns. Eduard Farcon, Jun Jun Farcon, Nes Garcia and Ronie Masangkay. Our total contribution to be recognized on November 22 at the Annual Giving is $ 2,000. With the other pledges, I am confident that we will attain our goal until the District Conference in March 2004.

In our District, there are some clubs who have 100 % Paul Harris Fellows and Multiple Paul Harris Fellows. In this months issue of The Rotarian, PDG Guiller Tumangan of District 3830 is being honored for having a 100 % Paul Harris Fellows family. He donated in the name of his wife, parents, uncles and aunties, brothers and sisters, children and children-in-law and grandchildren.

Let us continue to support The Rotary Foundation and LEND A HAND to our world.

Rotary Bazaar Fever. Whoever thought of the Project Name of the District Rotary Bazaar might be riding in the popularity of the popular chinovela Meteor Garden where the pop group F4 is starring. The banner displayed: Meteor 4Fs: Family, Fellowship, Fashion and Fair. Rotary Bazaar Fever. The theme was Lend a Hand for a Cause. It was a whole day affair that starts as early as 9:00 in the morning up to 9:00 in the evening at the Marikina Riverbanks Center last November 15, 2003. The organizer had plenty of activities prepared. The tiange was a hit where you can buy plenty of goodies and food stuff. There was a Kiddie Corner where the following activities were offered: clay molding, origami and coloring contest. For the mothers, there were the make up instruction demonstration, ribbon making for gift wrapping, cut flower arrangement and fashion show. The event was entertained by a live band and some group singing and dancing. There was even free medical consultation with blood sugar and cholesterol determination and bone density testing. Where can you find a total activity for a family like this? It was really a fever of success. Our Pres. Dindo Santos offered his services in the free medical consultation. "PRESIDENTIAL CELEBRATION IN FRANCE-INTERCOUNTRY COMMITTEES"

More than 800 participants from 30 countries discussed Rotary's peace, educational, and cultural initiatives at the RI Presidential Celebration at Antibes-Juan-les-Pins, France, on 25 October.

The event, which focused on the benefits of participating in Intercountry committees and ways of promoting the work of Rotary International in peace and world understanding, was a spectacular success. While introducing RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe to attendees, the event chairman used the extended metaphor of a symphony to acknowledge the contributions of Rotarians and others in putting together the event. "Over the course of our many, many meetings, three in Paris, four to five in Antibes, and nearly everyday in Denain I experienced firsthand the Rotary family, which the president suggested be emphasized at the celebration," he said. "This notion of the family only validated what I, as an only child, have felt for decades: I have found in Rotary brothers and sisters. "In his opening address, President Majiyagbe said that Rotarians are uniquely placed to help bring hope and healing to a world ravaged by wars, poverty, human greed, and a deep cynicism that offers a fertile breeding ground for hatred and desperation. "As Rotarians, we refute these arguments with all of the resources we can muster. And as Rotarians, we are most fortunate to have excellent resources available to us," he said. According to the RI president, current conflicts and wars make the intercountry program more relevant than ever. "As we spend today discussing intercountry committees and exchanging ideas, I think we will all come to an even greater awareness that international understanding has been a goal of Rotarians since the earliest days of our organization," he said.

President Majiyagbe closed the event with an address that highlighted the rich and eventful history of intercountry committees. "I think it is fascinating to note that the first intercountry Committee and so many that followed were formed between nations with a history of troubled relations," he said. "It is inspiring to realize that our shared Rotarians values have brought together men and women of goodwill even when their nations have been in conflict." The RI president cited intercountry committees that helped promote peace and understanding between India and Pakistan, Chile and Argentina, and Greece and Turkey at the height of conflicts among those countries. In addition, he said that ICCs also support service projects, promote fellowship, and are an excellent tool for expanding Rotary's membership especially in newer Rotary countries. Eight more presidential celebrations are scheduled through April 2004. The next three events will be on the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution in Bradford, England, 1 November; Water Management in New Delhi, India, 9 December; RYLA in Perth, Australia, 16 January, and Poverty Alleviation in Manila, Philippines on 30 January.
