PEACE AND ORDER IN MARIKINA CITY

President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

Gone were the times that we can leave our home door open and not worry that someone might break through. Nowadays, we can no longer leave our cars parked anywhere without worrying that it will be pried open or car-napped. We dont anymore have the peace of mind that we are safe even while walking on daylight. Indeed, some are even getting paranoid about the idea of being no longer safe anywhere--in the mall, in school, even in places devoted for worshipping.

Everyday, we read, hear about or watch videotapes of kidnapping, robbery, murder, rape and other forms of violence in the news. It is not just media hype but the threat is real. We can name one, two or more who where victims of these violence. Here at the Marikina Rotary Youth Center alone, some robbery had happened. Missing cell phones during a club project, robbed vehicles while parked during our weekly meeting and so on.

Is there still peace and order in the Philippines? in Marikina City specifically? Tonight we are privileged to have PSSupt. Felipe Rojas, Jr., Marikina City Chief of Police, to learn the peace and order situation in our City.

This afternoon we addressed one of the culprits that lead to violence. The Club together with the Inner Wheel Club of Marikina conducted a Drug Abuse Prevention Forum at Concepcion High School. On November 29, we will visit the Marikina City Jail. We can learn from some inmates what forced them to do a crime. These projects are a single step of a long journey.

With our 4 Way Test, the world will be a better place if there are more Rotarians or all people become Rotarians. But with what is happening in some clubs or in some districts, we will have second thoughts. This world will be a better place only if we act and live as true Rotarians and continue LENDing A HAND.

Performance Storytelling Contest in English. They were so cute little children, you will mistake them to be nursery students but they are either grade 2 or grade 3 pupils from the 11 Public Elementary Schools of City of Marikina. They were competing in the Performance Storytelling Contest in English last November 20, 2003. This is the first time that contestants from this grade levels were asked to compete. Before, contestant were from grade six levels. But when you see them performed in front of the stage, you will be amused with their mastery of their piece and delivery in English. This year chairman, PRO Ronie Masangkay worked closely with the Chairman of the Board of Judges Dr. Angelita L. Sta. Ana in improving this year contest and revising the rules and regulation of the contest. Donica Jane Villar from Fortune Elementary School, Eunice Joy Manuel from Malanday Elementary School and Marienuel Mina from Nangka Elementary School won the third, second and first place respectively. PDG Teddy Zamora talks on TRF. Last November 20 meeting, our club was lucky to have the District Rotary Fund Chairman PDG Teddy Zamora talked on TRF. He started by tracing the history of The Rotary Foundation from its beginning to its present state. Of course he delved on effect of the state of world economy that cause tremendous drop in investment income which had significant impact on the level of the funds through the years. This partly explained why in last few years our matching grants were not giving due recognitions. However PDG Teddy was optimistic in the coming year under DGE Fabi Enriquez that we can obtain a slice of the DDF and he challenged PE Kiko Pe Benito to prepare now a project to be submitted for matching grant.

District Shootfest. Guess what Rtn. Ferdie Vergara and Rtn Ronie Masangkay likes in common aside from beautiful girls? Would you believe they are both gun enthusiast. They are our representative in the recently concluded District Shootfest at Armcor in Parang, Marikina last November 22, 2003. Together with Pres. Dindo Santos these two fired their gun for the first time in a competition. Hope this will not be the last and you will be our permanent representative in that competitive sport.

"POLIO ERADICATION: A MODEL BY UN STANDARD"

The global polio eradication initiative (GPEI) led by Rotary International, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was singled out as an outstanding model for effective partnerships during a high-level panel discussion at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 27 October.

Organized by the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs, the four-member panel discussion on partnerships featured presentations that explored the central role of partnerships in implementing initiatives aimed at assisting the developing world. Some 500 participants attended the discussion, which is part of a series of public events hosted by the Second Committee of the 58th Session of the UN General Assembly. Noting that Rotary International's extensive partnerships For polio immunization have made it possible to reach the "last mile" in the worldwide fight against the disease, Amir Dossal, executive director of the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), said such joint efforts were essential in the delivery of services to those who most need them. He told participants that 75 percent of his agency's programs and projects involved more than one partner.

Tracing the origins of the global polio eradication initiative to a successful Rotary health project in the Philippines, Robert Coultas, RI Representative to the UN, said that Rotary values local and international partnerships in carrying out its humanitarian initiatives. "Rotary, the UN, and the international community together support the mission of promoting peace and development, which are imperative for a stable world," said Coultas. "No one organization can do this on its own; it takes collaboration, cooperation, and an established network of communication and resources. Working together provides an endless amount of opportunity to increase international peace and understanding."
