RY 2003-2004 Website Launching

President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

"PROUD TO BE FROM RC MARIKINA"

There are several reasons why a Rotarian from our Club can be proud of. One of the reasons is that we have our own website, our own domain for that matter, the www.rcmarikina.org. Very few clubs in the District have their own place in the World Wide Web, a home in cyberspace. Not only that, ours is the most updated. We update the activity pages every week. This could only be possible if we continue to have projects and activities (every week) to upload in the site. If you miss the Valley Wheel issue for the week you can read the Presidents and Secretarys message online. Please do drop by our home to see and feel the joy of our Rotary activities, and invite your relatives and friends too.

This website is our primary connection to the whole world. To sight an example: if you search your name in Yahoo (the most used search engine), 90% of the time you will be directed to our website. Because of this, I receive emails from other Rotary Clubs even if they are searching for other clubs in the Zone because ours is registered. For the record, our website started during Rotary Year 2001-2002. And this is the third time we are launching the new Rotary Years Website.

Another reason to be proud of is that we have plenty of members who serve the District as officers. For this current Rotary Year we have nine. We have 2 Past District Governors in our ranks, PDG Ting Tanco and IPDG Efren de Guzman. The presence of 26 Past Presidents also makes our Club stronger. Many Rotarians say that the strength of a club lies on its active past presidents. From the words of PP Joe Lee, PP means PERPETUAL PARTICIPATION.

We are the third oldest Club and the biggest in terms of number in the District. These do not make us special, but attaining an average of more than 88% in attendance does. A common problem with a big club is that it is very hard to get a high attendance rating.

Through our regular yearly contribution to The Rotary Foundation, we are able to receive Matching Grants and other World Community Service project funding. We were able to finance deep well construction, provide livelihood programs in dressmaking and tailoring, answer youth concerns through literacy and numeracy with this aid from Rotary International.

Lastly, our members are fully "rotarized", so to speak. We set aside our personal differences when we are called for to serve. Even if one does not like the attitude of other fellow Rotarians, one will work to his best for the love of serving those in need. This is the best example of what SERVICE ABOVE SELF means.

I hope that these assets that I am proud of will remain in our Club, in our pursuit to LEND A HAND.

...anecdotes and verbatim... by Sec. Val Varcinal

Marikina Zone Joint Induction & Handover Ceremonies. It may be unkind to say that what happened last Saturday July 5 at The Studio, Riverbanks Center left so much to be desired. Parking was not easy. Many where confused where the entrance of the hall is. The physical arrangement was very simple with minimalist concept. Registration area was too crowded; there were no markers that would direct the guest where to register. The celebration of Eucharist before the start was a very noble idea but many complained they were not informed about it or its just their excuse for being late. Musically talented Rotarians should have volunteered in the mass song to add more solemnity to the celebration or they were just simply not predisposed to do so. The food was not that delectable as expected with that meager budget, many were not able to partake any of the fish, beef, lechon nor dessert including many guests. Only few waiters were available to assist; one must help himself with the drinks. The program had a bad start with an opening prayer that did not materialize (the technician was not in his appointed place). I was even impelled to take over the prayer leader as prompted by many after the long lull. The rest of the program was expected run of the mill affair. What save that night was the acceptance speech of our President Dindo Ferdinand Santos. He has improved a lot, gained more confidence. His voice was resonating and clear. Then he surprised everybody including his wife Cecil and his mother when in the middle of his speech, he sang a few lines of the popular song We are the world. President Dindo a singer? With proper coaching and regular practice he can join the quartet of PE Kiko and VP Vincent. I bet everybody will agree with me.

Forgive me, I may sound too critical. But as I have described in my first issue of this column, I will narrate thing as I witness it and as I heard from the words of others who witness it. Good enough as expected, our club had the biggest delegation with all allotted seats occupied. Many were sober and awake until the raffle time with Rtn. Claro Capco even not physically present won an entertainment showcase (fortunately or unfortunately no one brought a bottle). How lucky he is.

No one is liable to what had happened that Saturday. There are things that human frailties could not guard against. If you could only see the stress and anxiety in the face of the Helping Presidents, you will understand how difficult the undertakings they have gone through. Everybody accomplished their part as expected and you will only understand this intricacy once you will be given the same task in the future. (Attention future Presidents) We have to practice the RI theme: LEND A HAND in situation like this, just as what they did. We can do a lot more to improve presentation of events like this. With our hand outstretch, instead of keeping it on our side, helping one another instead of bickering and blaming one another, we can accomplish the best.
