Literacy Month

President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

"LITERACY"

July is Literacy Month for Rotary. This alone is enough proof of the great significance Rotary has accorded literacy in its programs--inviting the attention of the whole Rotary world to direct its attention to literacy related activities and projects right at the opening month of every Rotary Year.

President Jonathan B. Majiyagbe has emphasized on the need to address illiteracy in general and made it one of Rotary International's major thrusts this year. He wanted us to focus on educating the women and girls, noting that in the developing countries females have lower literacy rates than males for one reason and one reason only - they are denied access to education. He enjoins all of Rotary to give them that access, because throughout the world, women are the primary nurturers of children and literate women will raise literate children. Solving the problem of illiteracy will produce a chain reaction in the life spectrum of a person. It is a truism that there is a direct correlation between the level of literacy to that of the health of an individual, and also with his ability to free herself/himself from the bondage of poverty.

Rotary International has teamed up with the International Reading Association to promote reading and writing. They have developed what is now known as the CLE or Concentrated Language Encounter. CLE is a literacy program that has dramatically reduced school failure and produced outstanding results in countries where it has been introduced. In the Philippines, Marikina City is one of its first beneficiaries through the efforts of our daughter club, the Rotary Club of Marikina North. You will see their streamer on our elementary schools that adopted the system. And they will hold a District Forum about the CLE this coming Saturday, July 26.

Our club is far ahead in this endeavor; we have gone a long way in promoting literacy in various levels. As a starter, we have recently donated reading materials to our adopted high school in Malanday the Concepcion High School Annex. We will also donate books to Sto. Nio and Malanday Elementary Schools. In the coming months we will be holding our annual competition on "Pagsulat" and also in "Pagbigkas" as well as the Storytelling Contest, all aimed to develop the ability and proficiency of the targeted students in writing and speaking the Filipino and English languages. We also have on our plans of activities the Child Care Center or literacy and numeracy program for children ages 5-6 years old, but this is still on hold. The committee submitted a budget of PhP 50,000 and we are still waiting for the funding coming from Cong./Dir. Del de Guzman or PAGCOR. We will entertain any suggestion on how we can more effectively serve our community in promoting literacy, and I urge and enjoin everyone to.

Let us LEND A HAND to educate the illiterate.

Dengue Awareness Campaign. July is the start of the rainy season. It is also the time when the dreaded Dengue Fever/Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever creeps in our midst. Dengue fever is caused by dengue virus transmitted by an Aedes Egypti mosquito. These mosquitos thrives in clear water in pots, empty cans, clogged drainage, water containers, spare tires, plant boxes or in any places where it can lay its egg and later hatch into mosquito. In medicine there is a saying an once of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. That is why the best way to prevent resurgence of dengue is to prevent the multiplication of the carrier mosquito, destroy its breeding ground. In short environmental sanitation is the key. That is the objective of our Project: Dengue Awareness held last July 17, 2003. This is a campaign to increase awareness of the pupils of Sto. Nino and Malanday Elementary School to prevent dengue by destroying the breeding places of mosquito. This simple task can be performed by any elementary pupil. Simple campaign materials with instructions how to clean and remove contained waters were distributed to them to make them responsive of what they can do to help in the campaign to prevent dengue. The Barangays of Sto. Nino and Malanday will benefit from this awareness campaign.

President Dindo Santos with Chairman Rtn. Benjie Malaya distributed campaign leaflets to the grade six pupils of Sto. Nino and Malanday Elementary School. They were accompanied by the following: IPP Dante, VP Vincent, PE Kiko, PP Tony, PP Flor, Dir. Celso, Dir. Doy, Dir. Fabi, PD Jessie, PD George, Rtn. Manolo, Rtn. Edward, Rtn. Claro. Members of family of Rotary includes: Sps. Cecil, Noemi, Arlene, Vicky, Eula. Vising. Mrs. Merle Papel and Mrs. Buenavista Topacio principals of Sto Nino and Malanday Elementary Schools respectively were present to accompany the club members.

Zone Chair Donation. One of the Thrust of RI this year is for different Clubs to work with other clubs for a common project that would give a greater impact to the community being served. Just like a family, a Rotary family, it will develop cohesiveness among participating clubs. This is the Club twinning. That is what we exactly did last July 19, 2003 when different clubs of Marikina Zone worked hand in hand to donate some twenty five school chairs at the Multipurpose Hall of RCC Cupang in Antipolo. President Dindo together with IPP Dante, PP Tony, PP Joe Lee, PP Flor, Rtn. Ronie trekked the rocky mountainous trails of Cupang, Antipolo using the brand new Crosswind AUV of Rtn. Ronie. It was fun working with other Clubs of the zone that brings Rotarian spirit of service at its best. The chairs were given by PDG Edison Ang to the Marikina Zone.

Heath Watch Project. One of our consistent health care community projects had its first action this Rotary Year last July 20, 2003 at the Multipurpose Hall in Bagong Silang Nangka. This is in cooperation with RCC Bagong Silang. It is also our first time this Rotary Year to lend a helping hand with our RCC in extending health care activity in the form of Free Medical Check up, Free Blood Sugar and Cholesterol Determination. Some fifty patients from Bagong Silang, Nangka benefited from this project. Just like in the Dengue Awareness Project our Clubs thrust is on the Preventive and Diagnostic aspect of community health care thats is why we named the project Health Watch. Some fifty were happily served that morning with President Dindo capably assisted by PD Ed Navarro, Rtn. Benjie, Rtn. Eduard, PP Eric, PP Tony, Dir. Pons, PP Jun Farcon, PE Kiko, Dir. Fabi, PP Flor, Dir. Celso, PP Joe Lee, Treas. Abbet, Dir. Doy. Dir. Del. Members of the family of rotary present were: Sps. Cecil, Vising, Noemi, Arlene, Julie, Vicky, Zeny Farcon with kids Valen Barcinal, Justin Bennett Malaya, Sarah Farcon and Aldrin de Leon. Sps. Vicky made the activity satisfying by serving tuna-cheese melt sandwiches and pandan flavor puto. Can you beat that, project with pleasure?
