"MEMBERSHIP GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND RETENTION"
August is Membership and Extension Month in Rotary. The strength of a club depends to a great degree on the number of its active members. Having 59 members, which is in fact the largest in the District, makes us a strong club. Having 24 Past Presidents, 2 of which are Past District Governors, makes our Club even stronger.
The ability of a club to grow and retain its members is one of the elements of an effective club. Another one is its capacity to develop members who can serve beyond the club level. We have several members who serve the District every Rotary Year.
To grow in number and retain the members, we have to bring in to our club quality members. It is useless to get those who are likely to stay for only 1-2 years. We just cannot invite those whom we do not know well. We have to target close friends and not just acquaintances.
To develop our members, they should be immersed in our activities, such as participation in the weekly programs and in projects. Our Rotary Information program ensures that they are made aware of their duties and privileges. They should also be encouraged to attend District Forums and the Rotary Academy for added information, and to experience fellowship with Rotarians from other clubs.
Our club does not need members; we need ROTARIANS who will be true to Rotarys objectives. And, to be a Rotarian, one has to be well informed to have a better understanding of what our organization stands for. Once informed, everything flows in its natural order. He will think of what will make our community better and how to implement successful projects that will improve the quality of life in the community. We will not beg him to donate to The Rotary Foundation. He will volunteer to give at least a US$ 100 for the sustaining membership or as much as US$ 1000 for a full Paul Harris Fellowship. These two elements complete the remaining criteria for an effective club. Fellow ROTARIANS, lets continue to LEND A HAND.
Announcements:
This Rotary Year we will have only an Outbound GSE Team and no Inbound Team. To be able to participate in the GSE Program of the District, let us search and recommend a young professional not older than 35 years old, and not related to any Rotarian.
One of the District flagship projects for RY 2003-2004 is the Barangay District 3800 in Antipolo. This is the district housing project wherein each club is requested to sponsor a house or two. Each house will cost around PhP 50,000. Are we going to allow our Club not to be represented in that housing project? We have not done a project of this magnitude before. Maybe now is the time. Lets take the extra effort to build a house at Barangay District 3800.

General Assembly. It was my first time to witness and participate in a General Assembly last meeting August 7, 2003. I was very much pleased with application of the Roberts Rule of the Parliamentary procedure. However, to an uninitiated non-lawyer like most of us, you will be confused at times. It is good enough we have brilliant practicing lawyers in our club that made the learning experience more interesting. The topic presented to the assembly by President Dindo Santos was about the proposal to exempt from all mandatory and other assessment members of the club whose accumulated years of service in rotary plus age total one hundred except the payment of basic RI dues, subscription to The Rotarian, council on legislation fee and district fund, provided however that such qualified Rotarian will apply in writing to avail of such exemption. This seems simple at face value but however since accordingly it will touch on the provisions of the by- laws, the Committee on Constitution on by- laws was consulted by the Board and the Committee had recommended the approval to amend that particular portion of the by- laws that will touch on the matter of exemption of payment of fees. This started the debate whether there is still a need to amend the by- laws or not. There was even the question of proper notification of members before the said general assembly was called to meet. There were those who intelligently presented their sides which to me were all valid to be considered. That evening was really informative experience to all of us. I believe that the only way to learn more about these matters is to involve ourselves in proceedings and discussions like this.
Membership and Extension Month. August is dubbed by RI as Membership and Extension month. In the August issue of the Rotarian I came across this article about the membership and extension: Rotary leadership knows that educated Rotarians are the ones most likely to remain active, productive members. This builds strong clubs, which in turn are more attractive to potential quality members. Strong clubs produce strong leaders, and their rise through the local, district and international levels provides inspiration and support to their successors. Its cycles of successes that depends on Rotarians ability to enchance and maintain quality at every level of the Rotary experience. Every member should strive to learn more about Rotary. It is the key to make possible the invitation of quality members. We should learn and experience to market or sell Rotary to these prospective quality members. And in marketing, we should know well the product to sell that is to know well about Rotary. The membership committee had submitted four prospective members for announcement: Dr. Dominador Marcelino, Dr. Ronaldo Bautista Ordonez, Mr. Terry Flores, and Mr. Juan Allas Jr. Please notify the membership committee any impediments to their acceptance to our rooster.
Duckpin Bowling. On the first playing day, our team placed eleventh out of thirty two contestants. Not bad for a start. Last Sunday, August 10, 2003 we won against RC North Bay East. With that winning streak, nothing can stop our team to take home the championship. The following were responsible for our winning: PP Roland Garcia, IPP Dante Verano, PP Onie Aguinaldo, PD George Ty, PT Rolly Santos, Dir. Celso Cruz and Dir. Fabi. President Dindo Santos and Sps. Cecil were both present to lend support to our team. Good luck and bring home the trophy.

"AUGUST: MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION MONTH" continuation
The three elements of Membership Growth & Development:
- The proposal of new members;
- The retention of existing members;
- And the extension of Rotary through the formation of new clubs.
Each of these elements needs to be emphasized at the club and district levels to maintain continuous growth of rotary.
Why is membership growth and development important?
- Think about the professional expertise your club could add to its overall profile by simply filling open classifications;
- Think about new ideas and club service projects that could be initiated;
- Think about the additional people to take on leadership and committee roles;
- Think about the range of personal and professional resources and knowledge that new Rotarians could bring, that will greatly strengthen the clubs ability to serve;
- Think about what the club will lose in terms of service program and accomplishments should it lose 3 or 5 members.
Leadership Training:
This is a very important ingredient for membership development. A club must not fail to develop future leaders if the members wish that they be stronger both in the district and local level.
In every district, Rotary works to develop leader for service at the club level and beyond. Some district program even surpass the recommended RI leadership development and training program. Like in the USA, some Zones have the (RLI) ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, (PRLS) POTENTIAL ROTARY LEADER SEMINARS, and some has the TRAIN THE DISTRICT TRAINER.
One of these programs, which will be implemented in the Philippines by District 3830, and our very own District 3800, is THE ROTARY ACADEMY - which for its objective has to organize and standardize the development cycle of a member to be a complete and well-informed Rotarians.
