Valley Wheel Vol. 39 No. 08 UNANG PAGPUPULONG NG MGA SAMAHAN NG ROTARYO SA PUROK MARIKINA
President On Call 24/7
by Pres. Dindo Santos
Tonight we have the first Interclub Meeting for this Rotary Year. We will have one every quarter and two clubs will act as lead clubs in each of these meetings. Our time to lead this Interclub Meeting will be on the fourth quarter of the Rotary year with our youngest daughter club, the Rotary Club of Metro Marikina, as our partner. This will be on April of next year.
The zone is so united that we dont only hold meetings together but also we have joint activities. We are the only zone in the District that held a Zone Induction with all the clubs participating. We had our first zone project last July 19, the Chair Donation at Cupang, Antipolo. On August 30 we will have the Zone Voluntary Blood Donation spearheaded by our Club at our clubhouse (Marikina Rotary Youth Center). On September 7, we will have a Free Medical Clinic at Cupang, Antipolo headed by RC Marikina North, which will provide the medicines. Having 14 Rotarians and 6 Spouses who are doctors, we are expected to contribute the necessary manpower. The "Search for the Most Outstanding Public Servant", the "Centennial Poster Making Contest", the "Golf Tournament" hosting and "District Valentines Party" hosting will also be done by our zone.
I compare this zonal activity movement to the annual bird migration. Flock of birds on migration fly in V formation, the lead bird 'breaks up' the wall of air that the flock flies into. The swirling airs caused by the lead bird's movements then help to push along the birds behind it, and so on. The V formation gives every bird behind the lead bird the same sort of assistance and push. Because this is a hard work for the lead bird, it 'drops back' after a short while so another bird takes on the work of the lead, and the process goes on and on with everyone being given the chance to take on the responsibility until the whole flock reaches its safe destination.
Inspired by the birds very nature, we can succeed as a zone-- serve more of the community, make our tasks a lot easier, and render our fellowships a lot merrier. This is a very good example of LENDing A HAND in our zone.

Timpalak sa Pagsulat at Pagbigkas. In celebration of the Buwan ng Wika our club sponsored a project, Timpalak sa Pagsulat at Pagbigkas, now on its 20th year. This yearly project aims to develop proficiency in the Written and Oral use of Filipino as a medium of communication among high school students. This year, the committee has invited 18 high schools to join this contest. The timpalak has been scheduled on two consecutive Thursdays: August 14 and 21 at Marikina Rotary Youth Center at 2:00 PM. Last Thursday, August 14 was part one of the contest where the contestants wrote an essay on a topic given by the board of judges. Those who lend a hand in this project include: President Dindo Santos, IPP Dante Verano, PP Tony Fidelino, PP Boy Ong, PP Flor de la Paz, PP Manny de Guzman, PP Eric Ignacio, PP Joe Judan, PE Kiko Pe Benito, VP Vincent Santos, Dir. "PRESIDENTIAL CELEBRATION IN NIGERIA"
The 2nd of the scheduled 15 Presidential Celebrations this Rotary Year was held in Nigeria last August 09, 2003. The event was also very much a celebration of the homecoming of RI President Majiyagbe, who was traveling back to his motherland for the first time since taking office in July. He was given a royal welcome for the historic achievement of his being the first RI President from Africa.
More than 1500 Rotarians flocked to the Nigerian capital, Abuja to attend this celebration. The event was planned to spotlight activities aimed at addressing population concerns in Nigeria, which with more than 120 million people, is Africas most populous country.
Other highlights of the event included an open discussion forum and a project fair showcasing initiatives aimed at addressing development & population issues, HIV/AIDS and other health concerns.
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo received Majiyagbe at his official residence, and the two addressed a joint press conference highlighting their complementary roles. The Nigerian President congratulated Majiyagbe and said: I will challenge the members of my government that Rotary is a worthwhile organization to join and support. He commented likewise on the challenges of Polio Eradication in Nigeria where the decease is still endemic, and said it was a national shame that children in their country were not fully protected from the virus, promising that they will do everything in their powers to rid the country of polio by 2004.
R.I. President Majiyagbe thanked Obasanjo for the support that Rotary has received from his government and from him personally, although he expressed his concern and requested the governments help in reducing red tape at Nigerian customs which greatly hampered the flow of medical supplies and other goods from the Rotary world to communities that needed it within Nigeria.
