President On Call 24/7 by Pres. Dindo Santos

Rotary will be celebrating its centennial year in 2005. In these 100 years, it made a mark in the world with the numerous projects that all the Rotary Clubs in 166 countries successfully implemented; these are projects that really made an impact in the lives of countless people. We Rotarians can proudly say we made Earth a better place to live in.

Likewise, the Rotary Club of Marikina will be celebrating its Ruby Anniversary on March 18 of the same year. Though short of 1 years to make 40, yet our reputation has grown deep roots in the community because of the various service projects and activities we did. We can proudly say that we made the lives of some Marikeos a little better.

A Rotary Club is made up of individual Rotarians a person with a name a job, a family, a life... Everyone has his story to tell, what they had gone through during their years how they do things to uplift the lives in our community what they did for the betterment of the Club

In its 38 years a good number of such individuals entered the portals of our club, some left already, but others preferred to stay. This is the reason why we have among us members on their 20, 30, or even 38 years. They served our club during the best days of their lives, and are still doing so as they are frolicking the sunset and the twilight sky of life. And we know that they served the club well, not just from what we hear but based on our personal experience with them. They deserve some privileges. The Club could give them something in recognition of their exemplary dedication to the ideal of service, something that we do as club service, a way to LEND A HAND in our Club.

Vitamin A Supplementation Project. As I have announced in the last issue of Valley Wheel we have implemented Vitamin A Supplementation Project at Sto. Nino and Malanday Elementary School last July 31, 2003. The objective of the project is to prevent and control Vitamin A Delinquency (VAD) among Grade 1 pupils in public elementary schools through giving of Vitamin A Capsules twice a year. We want to create awareness, educate student, teachers, and parents regarding the importance of Vitamin A. There were 490 grade 2 pupils from Sto. Nino Elementary School and 375 grade 2 pupils who were given vitamin A capsules orally that afternoon. President Dindo Santos was accompanied by Chairman PP Eric Ignacio, PE Kiko pe Benito, IPP Dante Verano, VP Vincent Santos, Sec. Val Barcinal, PP Flor de la Paz, Dir. Doy Smith, PP Tony Fidelino, Dir. Fabi Cadiz, Rtn. Claro Capco, Rtn. Manolo Favis Rtn. Eduard Farcon. Members of the family of Rotary were present to lend a hand to the project led by Sps. Cecil, Arlene, Vising, Noemi, Nora, Vicky & Lydia. One very noticeable public health concern among these Vitamin A recipient grade 2 pupils is the widespread cases of dental caries. I believe the club in the future can plan a project that can provide solution to this problem in cooperation with other health agency concern or NGOs.

Body Sculpting. Last July 31, 2003 meeting was memorable one. It was a rare moment for our club to have a well known, beautiful and sexy Guest Speaker, Dr. Vicky Belo. Aside from being a good speaker, she was humble, approachable, real person who has no qualms about her celebrity status as a dermatologist. In fact Treasurer Abbet Tan had the time of his life and did took pleasure in talking to her about his vital statistics and possibility of changing his image not by liposuction but by diet, exercise and tummy tucking. Dr. Vicky Belo indeed gain many admirers and fans in our club especially among our spouses. We acknowledge the efforts of PP Jimmy Capco for inviting her to our club a world class, celebrity status dermatologist.

Livelihood & Skills Development Project. The Objectives of our project is to provide livelihood training to deserving residents of Marikina, to inculcate the dignity of labor, to seek employment opportunities for the benefit of the graduates. The following are modules for the Livelihood Training: Tailoring & Dressmaking. Last August 2, 2003 we had a launching for this project with Rtn. Eduard Farcon as Chairman. President Dindo Santos gave the Inspirational Message. Rtn Eduard was well supported by the following who attended the launching: VP Vincent Santos, Rtn. Ronie Masangkay, Dir. Doy Smith, IPP Dante Verano, PP Boy Ong, PD Ed Navarro, PP Manny de Guzman, Rtn. Junjun Farcon, PP Jimmy Tiu, Dir. Celso, Rtn. Noel Flores, Rtn. Benjie, PE Kiko Pe Benito, PP Joe Lee, PP Joe Judan and the lone spouse, Julie Malaya.

Duckpin Bowling. The game is on again. Last Sunday, August 3, 2003 at Farmer Plaza Bowling Center, the District Duckpin Bowling Tournament had its kick off ceremonies. Our Team players included: Dir. Celso, Rtn. Enciong, PP Roland, IPP Dante, PP Jimmy, Rtn. Junjun, PP Onie, PD George. Others who attended to cheer were PP Tony with son Jonathan, PP Manny de Guzman, Sps. Noemi with DL, Pres. Dindo with Sps. Cecil, Treas. Abbet. We wish all the luck for our team to bring home the bacon.

Rotary Information by PP Roland Garcia

"AUGUST: MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION MONTH"

In his message in the August 2003 issue of ROTARIANS, Rotary International President Jonathan Majiyagbe focused almost all his inputs to the Membership & Extension efforts and programs. Below are some excerpts from that message:

Importance of Membership Development:

  • Underpin both the philosophical and operational cornerstones of Rotary International. An active & growing membership is in order to fulfill The Objects of Rotary.
  • Allows Rotary to expand humanitarian and educational work in our community and throughout the world.
  • Strengthen efforts to advance peace, understanding & goodwill.
  • Provides financial support for The Rotary Foundation.
  • Introduces fresh perspective to the club.

He also highlighted in the message that if we want this organization to be handed down to the next generation of Rotarians, we must constantly work to infuse new blood.

He likewise urges the Clubs to create a Family of Rotary Committee to help nurture new members and their families, thus making them feel much wanted and welcome to club as well as by the members.
