In developing country like ours, Vitamin A deficiency is a major public health problem. Lack of Vitamin A produce eye sign commonly in 1 - 7 years of age. The deficiency is frequently associated with diarrhea, measles and malnutrition. Our club, in an effort to help resolve this major health problem successfully implemented the District Vitamin A Supplementation Project last September 13, 2002 at Malanday Elementary School. District Governor Efren De Guzman was present to witness the actual giving of Vitamin A to some four hundred plus grade one pupils. My heartfelt thanks to chairman Dir. Val, Spouse Noemi, PP Flor and Spouse Vising, PE Dindo, VP Kiko, PP Boy, IPP Tony, Sec. Vincent and Spouse Eula, Rtn. Doy and Spouse Vicky, Dir. Jessie, Rtn. Ronie, Rtn. The final round of the District Duckpin Bowling Tournament this Sunday is very crucial. We are number two in ranking in the first game of this Championship rounds, lagging only by 25 pins to the top position. Last Sunday, our team performed well with a net pin of 1,197 or just 3 pins away from the 100 pins average per game per player. Good luck and Congratulation to Chairman PD Rolly, PS Floren, PD George, PP Jimmy, Dir Celso for the job well done. We need the winning throw of PP Roland and PP Onnie this coming Sunday. We are betting hard for our Team to take home the Championship Trophy. Wag natin sila pabayaan, kailangan nila ng moral support Let's cheer for them see you all in the championship rounds.

"POLICE MEMORIAL DAY"

The Civic Action Team of Marikina together with representatives of different sectors of the community commemorate annually the Police Memorial Day. This event honors the members of the Marikina police force who gave up their lives in the service to the community. This event is held every September 8, which is also the celebration of the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The program usually starts with a parade that gathers at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina where the Holy Mass is celebrated followed by the laying of wreaths in honor of the police heroes. Rotarians from our club who joined this memorable event were: Pres. Dante, Dir. Fabi, who is the skipper of the CAT, PD George who was in charge of the program, Dir. Celso, Dir. Del, PP Jimmy Capco and Rtn. Rey Montoya.

"VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENTATION"

A lot of our young pupils from our public elementary schools suffer from different degrees of malnutrition. This is secondary to our poor economic situation leading to improper nutrition and vitamin deficiencies. Lack of vitamins specially vitamin A can bring about poor health, visual disorders and even blindness.

Last Sept. 13, 2002, the Rotarians and Spouses trooped to the Malanday Elementary School to orally administer Vitamin A to hundreds of Grade 1 pupils. Those who came were: Gov. Efren, Dir. Val (Chairman), Pres. Dante and Spouse Noemi, PP Flor and Spouse Vising, PE Dindo, VP Kiko, PP Boy, IPP Tony, Sec. Vincent and Spouse Eula, Rtn. Doy and Spouse Vicky, Dir. Jesse, Rtn. Ronie, Rtn. Pons, Spouse Fely and Marissa.

"HEALTH CARE PROJECT"

One of the commendable projects of our club is our monthly Health Care Project chaired by PP Eric. Because of the rising cost of essential laboratory examinations for diagnosing and monitoring diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cardiac disorders, a lot of our patients try to avail of our free services. This month's sponsoring drug companies were Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Servier. Rotarians and Spouses present last Sept. 15, 2002 at the Sto. Nio Barangay Hall who helped in rendering these services were: PP Eric, Pres. Dante, PD Pidiong, PP Flor, PT Rolly, IPP Tony, PE Dindo, Dir. Celso, Sec. Vincent, Rtn. Doy, PP Joe Judan, VP Kiko, Rtn. Enciong, Spouses led by Pres. Noemi were: Vising, Elay, Minia, Fifty (50) Patients benefited from the free FBS, Cholesterol and Triglyceride determinations while forty (40) had their Electrocardiographs (ECG) taken.

"ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS"

Leadership, Citizenship, Personal Development

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program for community youth leaders. Young people chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice.

RYLA's Core Curriculum

Every RYLA includes the following topics:
  • Fundamentals of leadership
  • Ethics of positive leadership
  • Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
  • Problem-solving and conflict management
  • Rotary's purpose and service to the community
  • Building self confidence and self-esteem
  • Elements of community and global citizenship

Officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, RYLA is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. Each year, thousands of young people take part in the program worldwide. The impact spreads further as the program influences other young people, and RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs.

RYLA aims to:

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth;
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
