President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
This month of January is Rotary Awareness Month. I am confident that our members are more or less one of the well informed Rotarians in the District. We have our weekly Rotary Information lectures and we can read it in our Bulletin. We have the best resource person in the District 3800 about anything in Rotary, the walking Rotary Encyclopedia in the person of PP Ver Farcon. That is why I am encouraging new Rotarian to keep at pace with the latest information about Rotary. Read your monthly issue of The Rotarian, it has all the updated news about Rotary International, log on to the RI site and you can link to innumerous site to get your information about Rotary. The more you get to know about Rotary the more you get committed. So keep it up step your learning about Rotary.
We will be having an InterClub meeting together with the other Clubs of the Marikina Zone this coming Monday, January 20, 2003 at CVJ Clubhouse. District Governor Efren de Guzman will be present together with our City Mayor Marides Fernando. Our Guest Speaker will be former Department of Education Secretary, Senator Raul Roco. This is a momentous affair where we get the chance to know, have fellowship with other Rotarians of our Zone. This is an opportunity to make friends and contacts with other club members. I hope we will have 100% attendance in this meeting to show a good example to the other clubs.
Everybody is already aware of the forthcoming District Convention this March. Our club, being the host club is expected to have many important roles in the preparation for this convention. Our very own PP Roland Garcia is the Chairman of this much awaited convention. It is expected upon all members to give their total support to our Chairman PP Roland Garcia. In the talents night, I would like to solicit the participation of Incoming Doy Smith and Sps. Vicky; Incoming PRO Ronie Masangkay and sps. Liza; IPP Tony and sps Elai. I believe they have experienced what the talents night is all about and being veterans in this field we will have a good representation in the Discon Talents Night.
Let me express my continuous gratitude to all of you for your unwavering support to make our club still very much alive. Remember I love you all.
Secretary's Corner
by Sec. Vincent Santos
Our last meeting was a good start for the year. The invocation was very appropriate as recited by Monsignor PP Mario Isidro. Every enjoyed the unique entertainment by Rtn Ronie Masangkay who never run out of new ideas to entertain our club members. PP Rudy Valentino did add a considerable amount in our coffer with his usual bloody Recognition time. However our office Secretary is having difficulty convincing some members who beg off with the assignments in the program. I am appealing to everybody to please give us the pleasure of hearing and seeing you participate in the program.
The District Convention is past approaching and our Governor Efren de Guzman is expecting 100 % attendance from our club, prepaid before the deadline. Starting tonight I will enlist your commitment to attend the District Convention. This is a very much awaited Rotary Event in our District. It is very important since we are the Host Club with PP Roland Garcia as the Chairman. So I enjoin all, to please cooperate, commit your support now. What we have started in the Induction and Turn-over Ceremony needs to be sustained in this forthcoming event.
This Monday, January 20, 2003 Senator Raul Roco will be our guest speaker in the Inter Club Meeting of Marikina Zone at CVJ Clubhouse. City Mayor Marides Fernando will give us a message. District Governor Efren de Guzman is also expected to grace this meeting. Good news! There will be no meeting next Thursday January 23, 2003 in lieu of this Monday meeting however, you have to attend our Saturday Midyear Review at Riverbend Hotel.

"ROTARY GOES GLOBAL"
Rotary became international in 1910 when a club was formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. By the time Paul Harris ended his term as president in 1912, Rotary had spread across the Atlantic, with the formation of clubs in the British Isles. After his term, Harris continued his involvement in Rotary as president-emeritus, traveling extensively to promote Rotary both in the US and abroad.
In 1916, witnessing the growing popularity of the clubs in various regions worldwide, Rotary set up a district system. The organization became truly global transcending national boundaries, race, language, and religion as clubs mushroomed throughout Europe, South and Central America, Australia, Africa, and Asia. Rotary was represented on six continents by 1921. To reflect this worldwide presence, the name Rotary International was adopted one year later.
By 1925, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members. The organization's distinguished reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other luminaries to its ranks among them composer Jean Sibelius, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, author Thomas Mann, and diplomat Carlos P. Romulo.
During World War II, many clubs were forced to disband, while others stepped up their service efforts to provide emergency relief to victims of the war. In 1942, looking ahead to the postwar era, Rotarians called a conference to explore international educational and cultural exchange that served as the inspiration for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Rotary also played a significant role in the birth of the United Nations itself, with 50 Rotarians serving as delegates, advisors, and consultants at the UN Charter Conference in 1945. "Few there are who do not recognize the good work which is done by Rotary clubs throughout the free world," British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once declared.
From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word code of ethics for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways.
