President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
There is a saying In order to lead, one must serve. And not until he has learned how to serve and follow others can he become the optimal leader himself. Leaderships takes time. It is a continuous learning process. There are times when we make decision we are not fully aware of its repercussion. That is what I learned during our last meeting. Unaware that in one of our decisions during the last board meeting stirred a ripple in still waters, the board had unanimously decided to reconsider the suspension of discounts for early payments of the second semester dues in an emergency consultation just before the meeting was called to order. Everything was settled in a flash and I learn that every leader should be sensitive to the feelings of his members. I take full responsibilities for that issue and I express my sincere gratitude for your understanding and guidance. Rest assured that with your unwavering commitment and support to our club, I will continue to stir our club towards it stated goals despites some predicaments which you and I can resolve.
Tonight we are lucky indeed to be grace by presence of good leaders sharing their experience as leader, their challenges and their thoughts on how to be good leaders. I am referring to our very own District Governor Efren de Guzman, our City Mayor Marides Fernando and former DepEd Secretary, Senator Raul Roco. This gathering of the Marikina Zone Rotarians is an opportune time to align our club with aspiration other clubs in the Zone. This Inter City Meeting will be a chance to make fellowship with other Rotarians of the Zone, share ideas and solution to problems and to be united in serving our City to be a model City in the Country.
This coming Saturday, we will have our Midyear Review at Riverbend Hotel. We are proud to present our accomplishments during the first semester and our plans for implementation this semester. The midyear review is an important occasion to assess what we have achieved and what we still have to do to attain the Districts Goals. I am inviting everybody to join me at Riverbend this Saturday January 25 at 1 PM.
Lastly, one cannot lead unless he knows where he is going. Only then can a person say, Follow me, and proceed to lead the way.
Secretary's Corner
by Sec. Vincent Santos
Im glad to be back after being away for a few weeks of a well-spent vacation. I surely missed our Christmas Party as I looked at the pictures, imagining the horrendous laughter and applause during the performances of the Rotarians in hula skirts, the pagsisisi ni Hudas by Dir. Celso Cruz and the other terrific numbers of the other Rotarians and their beautiful spouses, conceptualized by our veteran showbiz chairman Rtn. Manolo Favis. I surely missed the gift-giving project chaired by Rtn Rey Montoya as I browsed on the pictures showing the Rotarians playing the role of Santa Claus to hundreds of indigent children. I also would like to thank Dir. Val Barcinal for pitching in and doing the entire dirty job while I was away having a good time. Anyway, you proved to be a very dedicated Rotarian and an excellent secretary as well. So, back to reality and back to work.
Last January 16, 2003, was the Livelihood and Skills Development Training in Dressmaking Module Graduation. The successful graduates were: Dolores Lapinid, Edith Oderon, Julie Abog, Vilma Pernia and Marina Belmonte. Their trainor was Mrs. Julie Diente of The Marikina Institute of Science and Technology. Of Course, this project was accomplished through the dedication and service of our hardworking Rotarian, Eduard Farcon. Manang-mana sa sipag at tiyaga ng kaniyang ama at kapatid. Sabi nga ni PP Joe Judan sa kanyang recognition.
I would like to remind all Rotarians to settle their respective dues and avail of the discount on or before January 31, 2003.
Let us show our support to District Governor Efren for the upcoming DISCON by assuring a 100% attendance. I would like to appeal to everyone for your support and commitment since we are the host club with PP Roland Garcia as overall Chairman of this special event...

"ROTARY TODAY"
Throughout the late 20th century, Rotary International's service program has adapted to the times. Rotary began to address the pressing global issues of environmental degradation with the formation of the Preserve Planet Earth program in 1990. Other programs were formed to address illiteracy, drug abuse, and the needs of both an aging population and the increasing number of children at risk.
Reflecting society in 1905, the organization had been limited to male members and remained so officially until 1989, when the Council on Legislation, Rotary's parliament, voted to eliminate the male-only provision. Today, there are approximately 90,000 women Rotarians worldwide, many of them serving in leadership roles.
Rotary experienced a growth spurt in the early 1990s when it expanded into former Soviet bloc countries following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union. Beginning in 1989, clubs in Central and Eastern Europe that had been disbanded for more than 50 years were re-established, and the first Russian Rotary club was chartered in 1990.
Nearly 100 years after Paul Harris and his colleagues chartered the club that would become Rotary International, Rotarians continue to take pride in their history. In honor of the club that first gathered in Room 711, Rotarians have preserved the room in an extensive re-creation of the office as it existed in 1905. For several years, the club maintained the room as a shrine for visiting Rotarians. In 1989, when the Unity Building was scheduled to be demolished, Rotary's 711 Club carefully dismantled the office, salvaging the original interior, including doors and radiators. In 1993, the Board of Directors of Rotary International set aside a permanent home for the restored Room 711 on the 16th floor of RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois.
