President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
As we go across the threshold of the second semester of our Rotary Year 2002-2003, it is heartwarming to realize what we have accomplished during the past semester. It was a delight on our part to be included in the top 20 clubs of District 3800 as reported in the just concluded Mid-Year Review last Saturday at Riverbend Hotel. However you come to realize that there are still schedules of activities like the DisCon, the Talents Night and other remaining projects we intend to finish. Though we have accomplished a lot, we still have to give our best efforts to recruit new members and to maintain a much better attendance. I would like to express my gratitude to PE Dindo, Sec. Vincent, Dir. Val and Rotarian Eduard who accompanied me in the Mid-Year Review. I would also like to congratulate PP Jun Farcon as the youngest and one of the best speakers in the Mid-Year Review.
I am proud to say that our contribution to The Rotary Foundation is still the highest in the District but we still need to add more especially in the PolioPlus Fund. Your donations are very much welcome. My dear fellow Rotarians, there are still more time to reach the peak of our ability to maintain our good standing in the District. Let us continue giving our unselfish support in the pursuit of Service. There are great deals of forthcoming activities, your presence in these activities will mean a lot in the attainment of our set goals.
Tonight we are lucky to have one of finest and knowledgeable speaker for our CREP; he is no other than PDG Jose Pepe Peralta. He will talk about Rotary Awareness. I am sure this will augment our continuing knowledge of Rotary. Let us listen to him conscientiously.
The preparations for the DISCON are in the top gear. Everyone is enjoined to register and pay now. Our District Governor Efren de Guzman is expecting a 100% attendance from our club since we are the host Club. Secretary Vincent C. Santos will start getting your payments and registration tonight and the succeeding meetings. You can also reserve for room accommodations at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel through Director Val A. Barcinal. Take advantage of the discounted DisCon Fee at P2800.
As we move onwards to our second semester, let us continue to Sow the Seeds of Love.
Secretary's Corner
by Sec. Vincent Santos
Last January 20, 2003 the Rotary clubs of the Marikina Zone successfully held their 2nd InterClub meeting at the CVJ clubhouse. The Guest of Honor and Speaker that night was no other than Atty. Raul Roco, former Senator and Department of Education Secretary. A very well coordinated open forum followed which somehow gave us a glimpse of how Atty. Roco would fare if ever he runs for presidency on 2004. Rotarians from our club present that evening were: Gov. Efren, Pres. Dante, IP Dindo, PE Kiko, Sec. Vincent, PP Flor, PP Jimmy Tiu, PP Jimmy Capco, PP Larry, PP Roland, PP Ver, PP Mario, PP Rudy, PP Joe J., Dir. Val, Dir. Celso, Dir. Pons, PD George, Rtn. Ronie, Rtn. Eduard, Rtn. Noel, Rtn. Enciong, and Baby Rtn. Udy who was inducted that night.
The Midyear Review 2002-2003 for District 3800 was held last Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Riverbend Hotel. During this forum, the District Goals and Thrusts for 2002-2003 were presented and reviewed. Various speakers including our very own PP Jun Farcon gave a review and analysis of the accomplishments of the different clubs in the different avenues of service. So far our club landed among the first top 20 clubs in the zone. We are in the 9th place with regard to attendance having an average attendance of 91.51%. Our club was acknowledged to be the number 1 in The Rotary Foundation donations with a total of $8000.00. Our good standing, of course is reflective of the unity and cooperation of all our members under the leadership of our Loving President, Dante Verano, with the full support of no less than our District Governor, Efren de Guzman. Present that afternoon were: District Gov. Efren, Pres. Dante, IP Dindo, Sec. Vincent, Dir. Val and Rtn. Eduard.
Reminding all Rotarians to please settle their semester dues and try to avail of the 500 Peso discount. Please remember our commitment and support for the coming DISCON by registering now and paying the 2800 fee. Thank You.

"ROTARY'S HISTORY WITH THE UNITED NATIONS AND INTERGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS"
Rotary has had a special relationship with the United Nations for more than a half century. At the 1945 UN Charter Conference in San Francisco, California, USA, nearly 50 Rotarians served as delegates, advisors, and consultants. And the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), established one year later, can trace its roots to a Rotary conference promoting international cultural and educational exchanges that was held in London in 1943. In 1946, the same year UNESCO came into existence, RI was granted nongovernmental organization (NGO) consultative status with the UN and UNESCO. Today, a growing number of projects are implemented in collaboration with UN agencies around the world. Working with UNAIDS, Rotary clubs promote AIDS awareness and prevention. Venezuelan Rotary clubs are working with FAO field staff to increase vegetable and poultry production. Nigerian Rotary clubs are working with the UN Population Fund to expand a maternal education and child spacing program. In Poland, the UN Development Program helped the Rotary clubs of Warsaw and Duluth, Minnesota, USA, create a joint business internship program.
Increasing levels of participation and inter-organizational collaboration inspired the creation of Rotary's Representative System in 1984, when Rotary International Representatives were appointed by Rotary's president to the UN offices in New York, Geneva, and Vienna. In 1995, RI made its first overture to an organization outside the UN system when it obtained consultative status with the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and broke new ground when, in 1997, Rotary became the first non-African NGO to establish official liaison with the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
