President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
Our Valentines fellowship last Thursday was one of the most successful ever. The lovely spouses did a very nice job of decorating our clubhouse in a valentine ambience complete with red ribbons. Every Rotarian with their spouse in tow came in their best Red Valentine outfit. You can notice a smile on every face, as if they were reminiscing their younger days when they used to attend Valentine Parties. The food was delicious highlighted with lechon shared by Governor Efren de Guzman, suahe shrimps shared by Rtn. Rey Montoya; buco sherbet and bakery products shared by the Valentine Birthday celebrant Dir. Val. The entertainment and parlor games prepared by the loving spouses were very lively and amusing. Imagine there was even a Bey-Blade competition for young once Rotarian. Everyone called to participate in the parlor games were very cooperative, everyone I saw were happy. And the climactic part was when each Rotarian presented a red rose to their spouses with their loving dedication and naturally followed with a loving kiss, except for PP Joe Judan who did a torrid kissing of his lovely spouse Miniang. It was really a rare moment for Rotarians to express publicly their feelings to their spouses. For some this was the only moment they can recall when they ever presented a rose to their spouse. At the end of the fellowship there were many door prizes to lucky Rotarians and Spouses. Everybody went home very happy. Love was really in the air in this very rare moment of the Month of loveindeed a very appropriate application of the RI theme: Sow the Seeds of Love
As of today, there are 41 RC Marikina Rotarians who have registered for the Discon 2003 and 4 have given their commitment to register before the deadline on February 28, 2003. I believe this is just to show how our club is fully in support of our Governor Efren de Guzman in this very important activity of the District. However I am also encouraging you to register your spouses so that they will witness all the important events of the Discon especially the Talents night.
This afternoon, we started the Student Leadership Award under the chairmanship of PP Joe Judan. I would like to express my gratitude to PP Joe for having the enthusiasm to continue with zeal and renewed effort in continuing this longstanding Community Service project. PP Joe has promised to deliver this project with innovative approach. Let us all show our support to PP Joe especially this coming Thursday which will be the final judging of the contest. To PP Joe Good Luck and Thank you!
Secretary's Corner
by Sec. Vincent Santos
It was such a romantic and fun filled evening (February 13, 2003). The Rotarians of our club had the opportunity of giving a rose with matching poetic words of love dedicated to their lovely spouses in celebration of Valentines Day. Some spouses were teary eyed while a few knew that their husbands are professional boleros. Nevertheless, everybody had a good time and enjoyed the parlor games specially the Eggplant Trip to Jerusalem. We also had a fill of the gastronomic feast complete with lechon, shrimps and other delights like buko sherbet cake of birthday celebrant Dir. Val.
Today, February 20, 2003 is the first part of our Student Leadership Award chaired by PP Joe Judan. The second portion, which will include the final selection of winners, will be held on February 27, 2003. Let us support this worthwhile project that is a big benefit to our youth.

"WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH: A LEGACY OF GOODWILL" (Excerpts from the article entitled VOICES FOR PEACE by Anthony Craine)
One of Rotary's most powerful and enduring influences on the struggle for world peace grew out of World War II: Rotarians played a key role in the formation of the United Nations.
During the war, London had one of Rotary's strongest clubs and was part of one of the most active districts. In addition to British Rotarians, thousands of other club members Allied military officers, diplomats, refugees from the continent found themselves in London. In 1942 they organized a conference to make plans for a peaceful post war world. Representatives from 21 nations attended the meeting, which served as a forum to develop a vision for the advancement of education, science, and culture. After several follow-up meetings, the conference evolved into an autonomous agency that eventually became the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO.
But that wasn't Rotary's only involvement in the birth of the United Nations. Rotarians also actively participated in a series of meetings between 1943 and 1945 that led to the formation of the UN, and Rotary was given adviser status during the 1945 UN Charter Conference in San Francisco. With no staff of its own yet, the UN relied on Rotarian observers for a variety of services, including translation, proper wording of resolutions, and the settlement of disputes among delegates.
Brigadier General Carlos P. Romulo, a member of the Rotary Club of Manila and a former RI Vice President, led the Philippines delegation to San Francisco. Romulo would later serve as the fourth president of the UN General Assembly. And when the UN developed its own declaration of human rights in 1948, it used as its framework Rotary's human rights resolution from the 1940 Havanna convention. (highlighting was supplied)
"The invitation to Rotary International [to participate in the UN charter meeting] was not merely a gesture of goodwill and respect toward a great organization," said Edward R. Stettinius Jr., U.S. secretary of state and leader of the U.S. delegation to the San Francisco Conference. "It was a simple recognition of the practical part Rotary's members have played and will continue to play in the development of understanding among nations."
In just 40 years, the good intentions, vision, and hard work of peace-minded Rotarians had converted a social club with a membership of four into a growing international organization that commanded the respect of the most powerful leaders in the world.
