President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
The CREP talk about Rotary Awareness last meeting by PDG Jose Pepe Peralta was very informative. It furthers our continuing knowledge about Rotary. We are lucky to have an experienced speaker like PDG Pepe who always welcomes our invitation to be our guest speaker. I would like to extend my gratitude to PP Jun Farcon who always come up with a very appropriate topic for our Continuing Rotary Education Program please continue this valuable support to make the Rotary Club of Marikina a very informed one.
Last Friday, January 31, 2003 we hit two projects in one morning. I am referring to our Book Donation Project by Chairman XC Alikpala at Taong High School and the Career Orientation Program by Chairman Doy Smith at Marikina High School at Concepcion Uno. Let me thank all those who participated in these projects despite the difficulty of rising in an early lazy Friday morning. For the Book Donation: Chairman XC, PP Joe Judan, PE Dindo, PP Boy Ong, Rtn. Claro Capco. And for the Career Orientation Project: Chairman Doy Smith, Rtn. Ronie, Rtn. JunJun, Dir. Pons, Dir. Celso, Dir. Val, PP Joe Judan, PE Dindo and Sec. Vincent. Your unselfish contribution of your time and presence in these projects is a good example of service above self. Let us continue to give our time, talent and treasure in some of the forthcoming projects of our club. All these summed up of our real expression of Sowing the Seeds of Love.
The DisCon 2003 is fast approaching. In the 2nd issue of the DisCon Supplement, our club had 28 members who availed of the early registration and I am encouraging everyone to do the. Being the host club, we set an example to the whole zone if not the whole District 3800 by registering early. Sec. Vincent is always available to receive your commitment any time. This will be our way to show our support to our DG Efren de Guzman.
Tonight, we will hear our Baby Rotarian Udy Enriquez talk about his profession and experiences in the business of life insurance in his Classification talk. Let us learn from him.
Secretary's Corner
by Sec. Vincent Santos
Last Thursday, January 30, 2003 our club had for our CREP speaker no other than PDG Jose Pepe Peralta. He gave us a very thorough and extensive lecture on Rotary Awareness with emphasis on topics suggested by our CREP Chairman PP Jun Farcon. That meeting was a revelation for our two Rotarians, Jun Jun who was the master of ceremonies and Noel for the recognition time. Both of them performed their excellently and deserve to be congratulated for a job well done.
Our club had a busy Friday morning (January 31, 2003). The Marikina High School requested our club to conduct their career talk to be held at the school quadrangle at 8 am. Even with short notice, Chairman Doy Smith was able to round up Rotarians who enticingly delivered their career talk to 3,000 high school students. Their experiences and success stories will surely inspire and guide these young students in choosing their future careers. Thanks to Chairman Rtn. Doy and other career speakers, Rtn. Ronie, Rtn. Jun Jun, Pres. Dante, Dir. Pons and Dir. Celso. Also present to lend their support were: Sec. Vincent, IP Dindo, Dir. Val, PP Joe Judan and PP Flor.
Almost simultaneously held was our book donation at Taong High School headed by Chairman PS XC Alikpala with PP Joe Judan, PP Boy, IP Dindo and Rtn. Claro.
Reminder to all Rotarians to please settle your semi annual dues and to register for the upcoming DisCon on March 21-22, 2003.

"FEBRUARY: WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH"
The Rotary world dedicates the month of February for the celebration of world understanding. How this special concern come about will be dealt with in my subsequent column for the rest of the month. Let me just at this point dwell on the basics of this topic.
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service is one of the means by which we Rotarians seek of achieve the Object of Rotary (to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise).
As a namesake, Mr. Anthony G. Craine wrote in an article adapted from the Rotary Centennial history book that is scheduled to come out of the press in early 2004, In the earliest days, founder Paul Harris would not have known that the organization would become a force in promoting international peace throughout the world. However, From the very beginning, Rotary has stood for peace and understanding.
Why is that so? Because from the start, all of the elements for peacemaking were in place: an emphasis on acquaintance, fellowship, and, a little later, service. As Rotary grew, Rotarians applied those elements to everything they did, and the natural outgrowth was a dedication to understanding and goodwill.
Rotary has always sought to push through social and cultural barriers by emphasizing cooperation among its members. Divisions based on race, religion, culture, and national boundaries have proved no match for Rotary fellowship. The resulting ties between members have been the basis for an untold number of educational and humanitarian projects that strive for peace or address underlying causes of conflict, such as poverty and hunger.
Today, Rotary actively encourages peaceful relations worldwide. Nearly all of the work done by RI and The Rotary Foundation seeks to galvanize disparate groups of people, reducing the likelihood of conflict between them.
My dear friends, let us all continue to uphold the good principle that binds us together.
