Clean Up the World Day

Clean Up the World is one of the most inspiring and effective international environmental programs in the world. It is a non-profit organization that promotes and coordinates environmental activities around the world on the third weekend of September every year. Volunteers work together in their own community to carry out local environmental activities, uniting like-minded groups throughout the globe in a massive worldwide clean-up of the natural environment.

The Clean Up the World campaign is one of the simplest, yet most effective means of tackling a variety of environmental problems. It is the largest community based event in the world and by keeping environmental issues in the spotlight, it is able to attract the resources of the communities, businesses and governments to develop solutions to the problems confronting our fragile environment.

Planning of the project started as early as July 2000 between the City Government of Marikina, the Rotary Club of Marikina and other NGOs. RC Marikina enjoined the other seven Rotary Clubs in the Zone, and so last September 24, 2000 at 7:00 a.m., the people involved including students, converged along the Marikina riverbanks in Sto. Nio. After the formalities, everybody started walking along the riverbanks with trash bags and started picking up the garbage they found along the way. A short program followed at the Riverbend with the following speakers: Pres. Eric Ignacio, City Mayor Bayani Fernando and Australian Deputy Ambassador Tony Melville.

Tree planting followed the program.
