Paralympics 2000
The Rotary Paralympics 2000 was held last December 3, 2000 at the Marikina Sports Center. The meticulous preparations done by the committee headed by District Chair IPP Roland Garcia and Project Director PP Joe Judan paid off when this sports event went on smoothly from the start till closing ceremonies. The complete wholehearted cooperation by the members and spouses added to the success of this project.
A total of 286 athletes vied for a total of 291 medals and P 20,000 cash prizes. Games participated in by the athletes were:
- Visually Impaired (blind) - Walkathon, 100 and 400 meter races, Javelin and Discus Throw, Shotput, Roll Ball, Softball, Chess, Table Tennis
- Hearing Impaired (Deaf and Mute) - Races, Volleyball, Dart, Javelin and Discus Throw, Shotput, Long Jump, Goal Ball
- Orthopedics (Wheel Chaired and Limping) - Relay, 100 and 400 meter races, Basketball, Dart
- Mentally Challenged (Retarded) - 100 meter race, Walkathon, Goal Ball, Soccer, Dart, Chess, Table Tennis, Long jump
Featured also was a band competition among the blind. Winners received a Total of P 10,000.00. More than 200 gift items were raffled off to the participants. They were also given Christmas gift-packages plus MAD t-shirts and caps courtesy of Pres. Jewel Canson of RC Greenhills.
The whole ceremonies and events were recorded through the courtesy of PTV 4 Network from 7 am to 5 pm. A full one-hour telecast of this Rotary Paralympics 2000 was shown last December 10, 2000, Sunday, from 5 pm to 6 pm. Highlights and footages of the event plus interviews by Governor Teddy Zamora, District Chair Roland Garcia and Pres. Eric Ignacio were shown.
