"On Watch"
Equipment: Nikon F90x    Date: March 2001

The entrance to the Akasaka Press Center compound is manned 24 hours a day by guards.  These security personnel are actually Japanese civil servants and have arguably one of the best jobs in Japan.  They are guards to relatively safe command, one that is almost an afterthought to U.S. Army Japan, the command responsible for it.  Whether this has anything to do with the friendly nature of these guards is unknown.  It could also be that these guards deal with the same few people each day and feel they've developed a sort of kinship with them.  The one firing off the sharp salute waves excitedly when he sees someone he knows come to the post.  The guard standing behind him is always trying to strike up a conversation with whoever he can make eye contact.  There isn't much in the way of depth to this picture other than to say these men always seem happy to be on the job.
