"Wedding Cake" About a month before he left, my friend Al
Bloom got married and had a small reception at a local restaurant, not far from
Yokosuka Naval Base. Here, he and his wife Akiko share the traditional
wedding cake. It was a split-second shot, one they were not intending to
pose for, but it worked out just the same. Al, who made chief journalist
the same time I did, shared more than a rank with me. We both discovered,
as we made our descent down Mount Fuji one August afternoon, that he was also
Jewish. We became pretty tight after that, although he soon left for a new
duty station in Italy.
