I am not arrogant: Abdur Razzak
 June 2000

Abdur Razzak is, on form, the leading all-rounder of the Pakistan team, and the world. But the lad from Lahore knows his roots, and his head is firmly placed on his shoulders. This interview presents Abdur Razzak the man and Abdur Razzak the cricketer. Excerpts

Q: How do you feel when you are called one of the leading all-rounders in the world?
A.
I have not become arrogant. I know my roots, I am aware of my struggle. The fame is because of the mercy of Allah, and the adulation is the love of the millions of cricket fans. I will never become arrogant towards my fans.

Q: How did the match-fixing controversy affect you?
A.
The seniors and juniors were a bit hassled. I refuse to believe such a thing exists, and the team only wants to concentrate on the game and nothing else. We all want to win and bring glory to the country all the time.

Q: Has anyone ever approached you?
A.
No, never.

Q: This Pakistan side has a settled combination. Is the team feeling much more confident now?
A.
Absolutely. Javed bhai and Moin bhai have done wonders to the side. The team has really progressed under them, and we are playing as a unit. I hope and pray this combination will take Pakistan to greater heights.

Q: You seem to have a knack of getting Sachin Tendulkar out every time you face him.
A:
Nothing like that. Tendulkar is a great batsman, and in my books, he is the best batsman in the world.

Q: You have now become an integral part of the Pakistan team. How do you adapt to both versions of the game?
A:
It is very important for the player to perform well in Test matches. Now I have played for Pakistan for about three years, and by the grace of Allah, the going has been good. I try my best, whether I am playing one-day cricket or Test cricket.

Q: What goals have you set for yourself?
A:
Nothing in particular. Just try my best and do well for the team and country.
