Looking at our apartment |

Apartment #202 This is our home for the year of our stay. We have found it small yet very complete for our needs. When the front door is open we get a nice breeze through. On humid nights the AC works wonders. It is home to us. |

As you see the building entrance door is just a liittle bit shorter than American door ways. I just clear it; to our Japanese guest, there is no concern. Our mail box is just around the corner on the wall. |

When you enter the apartment, the custom is to remove your shoes and we provide indoor sleepers. You see that our kitchen is small but more than adequate. We have an apartment size refridge, a sink, a double gas top range and above the refridge is a small electric oven. The white box on the right is our rice cooker, and the white box above the sink is the hot water heater. |

Across from the kitchen counter is the only table and chairs we have in the apartment. Behind the far chair is the door to the toilet room. Behind the near chair is the door to the sink and shower room. The entire apartment is 8' wide by 25' long. It is an easy place to clean and maintain. |

Our tatami room is the bedroom, office, entertainment room (we have a TV but receive only six Japanese channels) and our storage area. The tatami is made of straw reeds bound together over a paper covered floor. It is soft and comfortable to walk on, we only walk on it in bare feet. The bed on the floor is one futon and two mattresses thick. Each one folds in thirds and is stored away in the mornings. The storage doors are on the right side of the photo. The cherry wood clothes closet is very handy but we don't want it to fall during an earthquake. |

The sliders do allow us to have a good breeze in the evenings. We step onto the deck (we have deck slippers too) to enjoy fresh air, I often do my daily reading on the 4' wide deck. We do see several small flower arrangements done by our neighbors. |

The washing is a daily task for Connie. The left side is a wash tub and the clothes are moved to the right side for a spin cycle. All clothes are hung above on the deck for quick drying. Even the most expensive homes have decks for laundry. It is a very common site on homes and apartments. |
