Yokohama was established as an official city and international port in 1859. It became the only designated city opened to trade with the west. Today it is Japan's second largest city and open to visitors and trade from around the world. Our visit was just before Christmas 2004.

Marine Waterfront Park offers spectacular views across the bay towards the central part of town. The three tall buildings are part of Queens Square, just in front of the tall tower is the giagantic ferris wheel and the curved building to the right is the Intercontinental Grand.
The view at the right is the same area shot 80 stories up at night. The Marine Tower is world's tallest light house, luminatng over the bay. The 330' high observation deck gives a 360 degree view of Yokahama.
Chinatown
Yokohama's Chinatown covers 20 city blocks with seven entrance gates. The streets are typically Chinese with small shops selling Chinese goods, medicines, food and fortune tellings. It is crowded 24 hrs. a day. It is colorful and full of energy. Almost every street corner has vendors selling roasted chestnuts or Nikuman, meat stuffed dumplings.

Rigshaw rides were $15 per person for a 10 minute ride. Also notice people walking in the street, here there is little auto traffic. All the hanging latterns are lit at night. It is common to have your palms read or have a priest light incense and tell your future. .
In the center of Chinatown is the KanteibyoTemple, built in 1887. It is ornate and a popular stop for so many people. Many Japanese and Chinese purchase long incense sticks and enter the temple to offer "good luck for the year" prayers with the incense smoke. The prayers are to the god of accountancy, business success and prosperity.
Yokohama feature's a very fast, economcal and efficient subway system. It is clean, safe and the subway employees were all helpful  to us foreigners. We boarded it three levels underground at the end of the subway terminal. This line travels to midtown and to the Yokohama train station.
