Project Tippy

Building the boat : This boat was built during a two week period. When i started building it i was making a V-hull boat to see how it would handle, but my hull ended up flat at the rear, then i decided to add a step in the middle of the hull in hope to make it take off faster, but this step quickly ended up in two skis. Since the shape of the hull looked like it would tilt lots in turns i put 2 rudders so i would have at least one touching the water in turns.

The name : After the hull was made i took a good look at it and figured since it was so thin, it could tip over easily. So lets call it Project Tippy!

First time at the lake : I got a good surprise, i did not expect the boat to perform as good as it did. It was fairly fast but the two rudders caused lots of drag in the water. I had to watch out in the little waves because the boat would go into a wobble and once flipped over in the water. I could make turns nicely but if i went fast the boat would wobble and seemed to want to tip over but it never did in turns.

Modifications : I have only made two modifications to the boat, first i aligned the rudders in hope of having less drag and i might make two smaller rudders. Secondly i waterproffed my radio compartment since it was not during the first run, i know this boat will tip over more than once.

Conclusion : The boat is fun to drive but tippy because it is narrow. I will have more opinions after i get to try it out some more.

Comments : On May 27 it was windy and choppy waters, Tippy was cruising on the lake downwind, i gave it about 3/4 throttle and it was going pretty fast but it just caught up in the wind. It did a nice backflip and on contact with the water it broke in two. This has been repaired with wooden dowels and fiberglass
